Advice-Please! ASN or BSN-NYC

Published

Hi everyone!

I appreciate the responses and thank you so much in advance!!

I'm currently a pre nursing student at LAGCC, I know how competitive it is to get in to the program. My plan was to graduate from LAGCC with my ASN then transfer to a RN-BSN program. So far I got an A- is ENG101 and a A- is Gen Psych. I'm finishing up A&P 1 and unforunitely it looks like i'll be ending with a C+ or B- I'll be taking Chem in the spring as well as A&P 2 and I'll be able to apply this spring.

But… suddenly I've had a change of heart…..

I no longer know if I want to apply to the nursing program and get my ASN from LAGCC, or just continue to do my Prerequisites at LAGCC and transfer to a 4 year college. I feel like getting my ASN first and then transferring is just an extra step when I might as well go straight for my BSN. Do you all agree or disagree??? As well as if I do graduate from LAGCC and want to apply to a RN-BSN program are those programs just as competitive?? I would hate to go through the stress of getting into a competitive program twice!

My other question is which 4 year school should I look into???

Hunter seems like my first choice because of the cheap tuition but I'm kinda over CUNY and how extremely competitive it is. I feel like If I get 1 or 2 B's I won't get accepted to any CUNY nursing programs. I love the cheap CUNY tuition but the stress of getting straight A's just doesn't seem worth it….Thoughts..???

What about LIU-brooklyn?? I know the tuition is expensive but I'm 24, not employed so I'm confident I can get at least half of my tuition covered by fasfa and scholarships.

But, most of these threads about LIU are negative, all were from 3-5+ years ago, have things change since then??? It seems like the people who have graduated from LIU liked the school.

I understand its going to be a tough curriculum which I'm okay with, I don't mind working my butt off if I see the results are worth it.

Besides the tough curriculum would you recommend LIU-brooklyn??

Obviously I would loveeeeee to go to columbia but that just seems like a far fetched dream unless I have straight A's!

SORRY! for the mini novel!!! I'm just really really torn now as to what to do, and the LAGCC application deadline is in April so I need to make my decision-ASAP!

Again, I appreciate the advice. Thank you so much!!!!

I would say if you can do it just go for the BSN! I did LPN to ADN and I'm going for my BSN later this year. I got a late start, had kids worked HR for 13 yrs and then got laid off so I had to get something quick. I did the LPN route and landed a job and then went back and recently got my ADN! I was able to work and that helped me and getting my BSN online will also allow me to work. If you don't have a time crunch then do it all at once but if you want to get out and start making money and then get into the BSN program it's a win either way! Good luck!

You make a great point. Thank you so much for the advice. I'm Definitely leaning more towards going straight for BSN. I just think it makes more sense to just knock it out the way.

Now It's to choose which school! Ahhh.

Thanks again!!

I say go for your BSN!!! I also did my ASN because my mother is s nurse and said I didn't need my BSN. Well, now things are changing, hospitals want you to have your BSN. I wish I would have just done it my way. I am going back to get my BSN. Choose a school with good NCLEX results. It will be worth it in the end. Good luck

Thank you Laura! That is exactly what I keep hearing "The game has changed" and a BSN is needed! Great tip, to choose a school with good NCLEX results. I noticed you can find stats online, now it makes sense why. I'll be keeping that in mind!!

Good luck to you too!!

Specializes in None (as yet).

I agree with all those who are saying get bsn. ?. I did asn an it was honestly a waste of time, unless you have relatives or know people in high places no one would hire you with an ADN..Even with BSN they are asking for experience... It's tough but you are young and can do it. Another advice is to get some volunteer experience done while your at it. Let say you want to work at a specific hospital. Volunteer there ----make sure that there is a nurse manager on the unit that they assign you... Make friends with her... Let her know that you are studying to be a RN and would love to work there when your done. Good luck
