Advice for New Nursing Assistant

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Published

I am recent graduate of a Nursing Assistant training course. I was offered a job at a LTC facility about a week ago. I will be working 2nd shift. I am looking for any tips that will help me as a new Nursing Assistant. Also, any tips on how to gain respect as a young nursing assistant?

Thank you!

Don't get discouraged if the first few days don't go as smoothly as you would've liked. It takes a bit to develop a rhythm as to what residents needs are and who to see to first. Expect this rhythm to get disrupted. Don't be afraid to ask your co-workers questions as it shows you care about the residents. I am also new but I have worked for almost two months.

Do as much hands on as you can, it'll show your preceptor that you'll be a really helpful and hardworking colleague!

Learn to be efficient. This is something that you can observe in others and take from many sources but ultimately, you have to find what works best for you.

Honestly I feel the most important things to remember as a CNA are the dining times and whos continent/incontinent. With that being said, I recommend you take note of each patient, their dining and toileting schedule (continent, incontinent, foley, etc) and just remember what time to have everyone up and ready by. Other than that you should be fine, I was new once too and LOL I sucked basically had to be re-trained, I was so lost. Best of Luck :), you will be fine !

It will be hard, since you had no prior experience. Trust me, I did when I first started, and it was horrible for a few months. But in time, it was easier and I could cope with it. M y best advise to you is to learn everything you can about the floor, the routine, and most important of all, the patients. If you need help, ask. Don't put yourself in that situation where you do something by yourself and you get in trouble. Be nice and respectful to everyone, including your boss. Hey, even inf there mean, put on a smile and go on your way. Be sure that you are ready for anything and be on your feet the whole time. Anything can happen, so you have to put your best foot forward. As for respect, you have to earn that yourself. I was working for over a year as a CNA before people finally respected me. And overall, have a great attitude. Sometimes it's tough, but you gotta make the best of it. Good luck!
