Hi!

I had a teaching presentation, peer interview, and interview with the school of nursing dean on yesterday. I am pretty sure (95%) that I got the job. The dean told me she had to get the faculty's feedback but felt sure my background and certifications fit the position perfectly, she even mapped out the job description for me. I am so excited, a smidge disappointed in the salary and will try to counter offer once it is formally offered to me! Hopefully the 4 faculty members I presented and peer interviewed with liked me!

can anyone offer any advice for 1st year as an educator?

What was your beginning salary? I am working on my DNP, but am not there yet.

Thanks!

Amanda

Hi Amanda,

Welcome to the role of nurse educator (it appears). I am hopeful that you've secured a new position as a nurse educator. I've been a nurse educator for fourteen years and have never looked back. I absolutely love my job! I believe the key is having a great mentor and faculty who are positive role models in the classroom and clinical setting. My masters in nursing education degree scratched the surface, and working as a nurse educator is where you really learn.

Now as for salary, this depends on where you live, prior experience (even adjunct as a clinical instructor), college or university, private or public, and if the school considers degrees or not. There are many schools who do not place faculty on a higher scale just because of their doctoral degree (unfortunately). Most of the salaries I've noticed for brand new faculty without experience ranges from 50,000 to 53,000, and with experience from 70,000 to 75,000 (it really depends on the scale selected by administration). So, I have always believed we aren't paid nearly what we should for what we do; however, it has to be the love of educating our nurses that drives the passion, because it's not the salary. The pay can be as high as 85,000 - 90,000 with time :-)

Best wishes!
