Advice needed...please!!!

Daughter has taken RN NCLEX 5 times and failed...she has taken Kaplan review, reviewed priorities and delegation in nursing...Latchey...Saunders book and cards. HESI, she knows the material...just gets mental block...anxiety...tried to find a tutor...no luck... good family support...on antianxiety meds and for ADD...:confused:how can she get past this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

imo you don't need the help of a tutor. you need to see a learning specialist. explain to the specialist what has been occurring when it comes to the exams. then a battery of test will be done on your daughter to assess what is actually going on. be it test anxiety or any other type of learning or test taking challenge.

if something is found, by law, your daughter will be allowed certain accommodations when taking an exam or in the classroom that will allow her to be successful.

i am not just talking exams in high school or college, i am speaking about the professional exams too…series 7 or 55 (securities trading), the nclex, cpa…and so on. you will be allowed accommodations on any exam.

see if there is an office dedicated to students with disabilities or learning challenges. ask for a referral to a learning specialist. many will have someone that is affordable to send you too.

some accommodations given are:

proctored and increased time to take the exam (usually double the time)

taking the exam on a computer: the test will be scanned into a computer and the student will read the exam on the monitor…..or there are programs that will either read it with you…or just highlight each word for you to read. kurzweil is one program.

and the list goes on and on for those experiencing test anxiety.

my friend wanted to be a physician, but would do poorly on exams from time to time. this is dating back to junior high and high school. he attended college and always thought that his exam scores never reflected what he knew. he would go for a semester or two…then stop. then one of his profs suggested being tested and the rest is history. he did not start med-school until he was in his mid 30’s, but the accommodations he received proved to be very beneficial. he’s a physician today thanks to his prof’s suggestion.

look up conditions such as: dyslexia, adhd, add, auditory processing disorders and there are 100’s more that will prevent a person from being successful. often times i heard how some people will simply not do well on standardized exams. but rarely do you hear these same people probing for answers to why.

sorry for the long reply....hehehe

I failed the NCLEX 4 times. I was so discouraged after doing the pearson view trick the 4th time and it let me go to the credit card page. I was scoring 90% on Kaplan I guessed that I had somehow memorized the answers. I had only mostly studied Kaplan.

I just took the exam for the 5th time but got the good pop up this time. This time around I prayed God for directions. I registered for the Hurst review. Then I studied the book they gave to me. I also used Saunders this time but I only read the questions and rational in the book. I did not feel that doing many questions helped me so I did not this time. I studied to understand the material and applied Hurst suggestions. The money paid was so worth it. Hurst allows you to take the review many times in a year period. I drove 2 hours away to take the review 2 months prior to the exam. then

I read thew mterial daily for 2 months. then, I sat for the course again the week of the exam. I stongly believe that after God, the Hurst review and info that I had found on a thread in this website help me pass this time. search (spideman, Mrs wee or Vchips) to obtain the info.

Don't be discouraged, you can do it. I always passed my exams in nursing school without a problem but this test somehow I could not pass it but thank god it worked out this time.

Many people post how they pass the 1st time but I wanted to let those who have been trying unsucessfully know that it's possible to pass after many tries. Thanks to my dear God who directed me to hurst.
