Advice For Soon To Graduate BSN Student

Hi there,

So I am graduating this coming June 2014. I get pretty good grades (3.6 GPA), I volunteer once a week at a hospital, and I am working part-time (not in a healthcare field). What I want to know is, what should I do in order for me to stand out, once I start applying for a job? I feel like on paper, I am pretty mediocre. Some of my other classmates already work at a hospital, some hold office positions for our class and SNA, etc.

I don't know how else I can prepare that would make me unique in my resume. Any advice?

I'm in the same boat as you.

Being here has discouraged/ scared me and I haven't even started applying yet!

Do you have serving/bartending experience? That has helped my resume, as nurse managers always say how similar nursing and serving tables can be! Also, put down if you used electronic charting during clinicals (Epic for example).

I have been successful also just playing up my customer service experience. Thats a biggie!

The important thing is to highlight what YOU bring to the table, what makes you a stronger candidate for a position.

If you don't have hospital experience, demonstrate customer service experience.

If you don't have work history, demonstrate volunteer work or activism with nursing associations (SNA, ANA, etc).

Basically, you are using that 1 page resume to make yourself stand out. Tell them what they want to hear! :)

From the hiring manager side . . . applicants that have taken the time to investigate the organization (prior to interview) create a positive impression. If a potential employee can ask questions or make comments that show he/she understands the mission statement, patient population, challenges, history, etc. of the organization - this is an very clear indicator of motivation & energy; attributes of a great employee. This is absolutely essential, if the organization is faith-based or serves a highly specialized population (e.g, cancer).

Omg - how are you working while in nursing school?! That alone is impressive. And with such a high GPA. I could barely squeeze in a good nights sleep most nights...
