Advice for current nursing student

Hi everyone,

I am current nursing student in a BSN program in FL. I have two semesters left before I take the NCLEX and graduate an I think I have an interest in ER nursing. Since we don't have classes this summer in our nursing program I am doing EMT school and it has really made me realize how interesting all of this really is. In my state you can challenge the paramedic state boards if you have your RN license, EMT-B, and ACLS cert and I plan on doing that. I am just wondering if there are any other certifications that would help me stand out in the crowd once I graduate for ER nursing. Also, is there anyone on here that got hired as a new grad in the ER that could offer some advice? Thanks!

I think you have a great shot at getting into an ER as a new grad. I can't think of one single thing that you could do to improve your odds of getting a job in an ER --obviously RNs with experience may have an edge, but as a new grad, I think you have a lot to offer.

Spend some time in an ED where you might like to work or one that will give you a recommendation. We see students that do 3-4 month practicums in our ED and we have hired a few of the best. Work with your instructor on choosing a good place and polish up your ED knowledge base before the practicum if you are serious about getting and giving the most. Thanks so much! I'll look into that book. I'm not sure how much clinical time I'll be getting for nursing school in the ED, but I know we have 2 days in EMT school there and then we also have two days of ride time with Fire-Rescue. I'm hoping that since my nursing school has a contract with the hospital I'm doing EMT clinical in, I'll be able to do my nursing internship there too. Maybe if I get to know some people and they like me, I'll even get to work in the ED for internship too. I haven't ever really heard of anyone doing internship there though.
