Most programs, especially online, are not extremely rigorous. While developing your skills and comfort level as a nurse is the most important task in that first year, IMO, I don't see why a bright person who doesn't have a lot of other lifestyle distractions couldn't do both. You're really only working at developing your skill while at work. That leaves a lot of free time in which you could be studying and writing papers.
Work is work, so you won't be bringing that home with you unlike school. So I plan to get my ADN and work on my BSN online part time at first. Depending on how consuming I find my coursework I may choose to switch to full time because I do want to also get my MSN in midwifery but time and circumstances will tell

When it comes to advancing your degree and education, what are people's thoughts on continuing right after graduating with your ADN or BSN? Is it better to take a break from school and focus on developing your skills and getting into the swing of things, so to speak, as a new grad?
