I was wondering if any one has any info or could suggest where I could find some on starting an adult day care I was thinking that this could be a way to post pone NH placement or perhaps prevent it. I Think that if some families had this option before home health is needed it could get elders out of house decreasing depression , keep them feeling social and their families could still work and pick them up after just like day care for the kids I am just begining to think about this maybe using the old school here in my town just kicking it around a bit any one think it is stupid or perhaps something to think about or maybe some one out there has started such a service? I was even thinking like getting the loved ones to appt, have provided meals ,entertainment ,craft hobbies. Make certain meds given monitor bloodsugars ect . any suggestions? I am an LPN with 12+ years LTC experience

I know there has to be a great need for this elder care. I am interested in learning, also, if someone knows anything about this. My biggest question is how much would you charge?? I forsee need for respite care in home, teaching regarding meds, diagnosis, diet, etc. I also wonder what the legal ramifications are if you do this on your own.

Start your searches with the State department of Health - and then inquire regarding contacts with the Area Agency of Aging, Veterans administration and also with the Medicaid passport programs for Ohio. Call centers to find out what is charged in your surrounding area for a baseline.
Absolutely it is a wonderful idea. It can be costly - you need an attorney, and an accountant along with liability insurances. And PLEASE - whatever you do - NEVER- go into business with a Friend - she will screw you in the end - LITERALLY!

First one has to decide on social model versus medical model service. Medical model generally nets higher reimbursement, but your clientele will obviously also be more acute. Social model can be harder to "sell" for those who don't see the value of having Mom or Dad in day care (adult day services is the term most use now to more wholly encompass all that this type of setting can offer.)
Check out http://www.nadsa.org/train_edu.htm for literature specific to this business. As you go further, check out the 3rd party reimbursement available in your state (Medicaid, VA, local funding.) Give a shout if you need more info as you delve :).
