Adolescent psych and a NEW RN????

Published

Ok..

I was offered a job within 1 week of getting my RN license, GREAT!!

I am unsure that I am qualified.. I have been a medic for 11 years, so I know I can be confident in whatever I do but..... I am not sure that I will know what to do:scrying:. The facility said they could train me and it would not be a problem, so they have confidence in me which is a good thing:wink2:.

The facility accepts ages 12-17 and I love:heartbeat children or I would not have considered this position. I guess I am unsure as to whether I will be able to adapt. Is this a normal feeling for a new grad? I have also accepted a position part time with adult psych. I know this is a major step for me and I just want it to be a positive experience. I am looking for any suggestions that would make this a positive transition. I will be starting tomorrow with the adolescent facility please keep me in your thoughts.

I'm sorry that you let one person cloud your opinion of the entire facility. Can't say that I would have gone to mgt because I think you will always run into people that you don't jive with. It wasn't like you were stuck with that one nurse for the entire orientation. You have to do what is right for you of course but there is just such a need for good nurses that can successfully work with this population that I hate to hear about something like this chasing you away. Its interesting because I make way more in psych than my friends in med surg. Anyhoo, glad you are happy with your med surg gig and good luck.

I guess I should clarify.. my "GOING TO MANAGEMENT" this is a small facility, there is no DON, only a administrator, no unit manager because it is a fairly new facility trying to get it's feet on the ground. They employee only 5 RN's total for Day and Night shift. I was supposed to do all my orientation with the same nurse. She had a family issue and was out for 2 days that is how I was able to orient with a different nurse. So for me to make known that the orientation was not what I expected, I only had one place to go and that was the administrator. I LOVE:redpinkhe the job, but only after I was shown correctly by a nurse that was not afraid to teach me. After going to the administrator is when I learned that they had hired several nurses before me and NONE:no: of the ones stayed that she orientated, but no one ever told the administrator how they were treated, only they had a better offer somewere else. Not saying she treated the others like she treated me.. because I don't know them, but for the administrator to say that none of them stayed... Humm .. makes me think that possibly the same thing happened to them too. But because I spoke up I am able to finish my orientation with the other nurse. Now I will have a part time job I love instead of leaving like other ones did.

As far as the pay in med surge.. well we have several nursing schools around here and there are alot of students applying for the same jobs, so THANKS:up: to my paramedic background and the credentials we are required to have, I actually qualify higher than a new grad with no experience, and they don't get alot of those wanting to work med surge around here. In general med surge is where new grads go until they get more experience then they start applying for specialty areas. But the psych facility hired me as a new grad because the medic experience really didn't apply there. That is the reason for the pay difference. I don't want to sound like I am bailing, because I am not, census is low and they can only offer a part time/ prn position right now and I really need full time to pay the bills and feed the kiddos. Med surge is full time and is a established facility, hopefully job security.
