ADN, how to get accepted into one

Published

I just finished a CNA program. I got all C in (physiology, anatomy and Microbiology).
I want to get into an ADN program.
I would appreciate if someone would share their experience on how they went from being a CNA to a ADN.

I am considering these routes.
1. become a LPN and get an IV cert, then do a LVN to ADN.
2. Work as a CNA and apply to an ADN program, hoping that my CNA cert and my B.A in another field will give me enough points to get into an ADN program.

You need to raise your GPA.  Retake those classes and get a B or better

I also recommend retaking classes and aiming for an A since those three classes are very important and schools usually look at your science GPA but mainly focus on the grade of Anatomy, physio and microbio. I have friends in ADN program and some are lottery-based and accept students every semester so it's also a good idea to keep applying maybe even as you're retaking the classes. Your CNA certification also helps your application since some programs are also point-based and you get extra points for some certifications. I don't know much about LVN to ADN though. Good luck:)

Even if you get an LPN and then do an LPN to RN program, you still need higher grades in those courses. They are THE prerequisites that are going to get you into those programs. They are extremely competitive. Having a Bachelor's degree got me a point or two. Being an LPN is obviously required. Don't know any nursing schools who give points for CNA. But the higher the GPA in the prerequisites, the more points you get. I got all As in those courses, and had a degree. I had the maximum points. The only way to get higher for most programs is to be a Veteran. No one in my class was a Veteran. And remember there are limited amounts of seats in each class because there aren't enough nurses who have degrees to be instructors. They can only teach a limited amount of students.

It depends on the school.  Nursing schools vary in admissions criteria.  Many schools consider related experience in admissions decisions.
