I am a Registered nurse in the US and moving to Adelaide in a couple months. I will be finishing NP school in a few weeks here! Does anyone know if I can work as an NP in Adelaide and what the process is? Do they hire new grad NPs?

While I look for NP jobs and follow the paperwork there for that, I would like to work as an RN in the meantime. Are there any particular hospitals/clinics in Adelaide that you know is hiring and pays well?

You will have to be assessed as an RN first by our national registration for health professionals first. Then they will look at your NP quals.

Here in Australia, Nurse Practitioners have to be an RN and specialised with experience of 4-5 years first and then take a nurse practitioner masters, before they are endorsed as NP.

When you are treated by a Nurse Practitioner in Australia you can be sure they have loads of experience.

Yes, Nurse Practitioners are everywhere in Australia. But there must be positions available, there really is not a NP fresh grad, as they already have experience in advancenursing decisions when they are endorsed and have been working as an Nurse practitioner candidate.

As for jobs forRN's first of all you must have working rights.

One forumer here was saying it is difficult at this time for nursing positions in Adelaide.

There are all the major hospitals there, it is difficult to say how difficult work is to get, when we have no idea if you require sponsorship etc. If you do have working rights, it is possibly easier to approach the HR departments for work. Work casual (if you have that right) and get your foot in the door, so to speak.

Yes I am moving to Australia as a permanent resident and have sate sponsorship by Adelaide to work as a registered nurse there. My registration with AHPRA is complete, I just need to go there and prove my identity by face to face interview.

Hence I will have rights to work there.

Do you know if I should look for jobs where the employer would sponsor me as an NP candidate? I really would rather work as an NP after having gone to school and working so hard to get my Master's. Do NPs there have prescription rights? Do they work more in the clinic setting? I am interested in working in a clinic/outpatient's women's health clinic as a nurse practitioner. I realize that I will not be able to practice independently yet, but it would truly be a blessing to find a sponsor in Adelaide that would take me on as an NP trainee/candidate. I don't mind taking extra classes if needed so that I can be a good practitioner in an Australia Health Care setting.

Any information you can provide would be phenomenal and much appreciated.

I'm not really familiar with either NP or PN. It just seemed like what you described earlier matches that job offer. There are different pay rates for public and private sectors. A Nurse Practitioner in the public sector will expect a gross annual salary of AUD 94,500 for the first increment. An RN is under level 1 whereas an NP is a level 4 and as Ceridwyn already mentioned above have extensive nursing experience.

The Royal Adelaide Hospital is the biggest public hospital in SA. They are in the process of building a new Hospital which will open sometime 2015/2016. Public and private sectors normally advertise through careerone, a few in the local paper. Most of the new grads say there are not a lot of jobs for them in the public sector. Not sure about rural/remote. My wife works in the private sector - nursing home manager, she said there are lots of applicants, mostly international trained looking for sponsorships. Sponsorships are difficult to come by now because there is a current surplus of nurses. Whether it applies to you as a NP, I'm not sure.

Thank you for the info! I really appreciate it. Will look into those hospitals for sure. I guess I might just have to find a registered nurse position for a while until I figure out NP stuff.

Also, my background is telemetry/cardiac nursing (2 years) and 9 months of clinic/aged care nursing. Would I qualify to apply for women's health floors at hospitals or would they require previous experience? It seems like it is harder to transition from one type of nursing to the other in Australia..is this true?

The NP system and approach in Oz is very different than in US. There very few NPs in Australia at this time. Correct me, but I think we are talking a couple of hundreds for the entire country.

I don't think anyone would seriously be interested in hiring a brand new NP from overseas with less then 3 years work experience which is not even in the area of expertise. Sorry.
