I work in a 22 bed ED where we seperate patients by acuity level.I have worked there for over 2 years now, prior to that worked in a Urgent Care based ED. My problem is this, I am never scheduled in Acute Care. My nurse managers say it is because I don't have enough Acute Care experience but I can never get any experience if I am not up there. I spoke with them and after the first of the year would come in on my day off to work in Acute Care but this hasn't helped either. They say I am doing better but I still don't get scheduled up there. I feel I am ready to except the challenge of dealing with critical patients but how do I let them know I am ready for this? I have spoken with them about this issue but still nothing get resolved. They put me in the Triage area where you have to work by yourself and deal with all levels of acuity and I am told I do very well there. I also work in the intermediate area where we deal with cardiac issues and abdominal issues. I am looking for other options at different hospitals now.

Do you have all the trauma certs they offer? What about peds certs? Have you specifically asked what can I do to get scheduled on the acute side? Good luck. You sound very frustrated and rightfully so.
We only have acls and pals no other education required. I am acls but havent been able to attend pals because it is always on my weekend to work and there are always others that get to go first. One of the Docs has just started giving lectures but has only done one so far. It was very interestting and informative on acls drugs.
