when does the active duty start?

Published

Hi All

I am a new graduated RN, and I just get a three years contract with army. my question are:

Does my active duty start when I start my OBLC training or after my OBLC traning?

I will have a ICU training after i start my active duty, which maybe 6month or 1 year. Do they count it into my three years or not

really appreciate your answer.:redbeathe

I think your active duty starts the first day you are comissioned... not sure though. Where did you get stationed and what were your choices? Congrats!

Yes your active duty starts with you doing your comissioning no more then 72 hours before your report date to OBLC. A easy way to look at it. If you are getting paid, it's active duty.

Renee4christ and Jeckrn, Thanks for your answer very much. my choices were water reed, San antonio, and NC's hospital (sorry, don't remember the name). So far, I do not know where is my first station. do you guys know how do they treat new graduated RN? Usually how long do we stay at the station.

Thanks again.

Your orders will state what day you begin active duty service. New grad RNs are treated well but there are always those nurses who are rude, which is unavoidable and can be seen at every hospital in the world. :) You can plan on staying at your first duty station at least 1 year. They asked us here who wanted to stay and who wanted to leave after a year. If you leave after a year you will most likely go to a small MEDCEN, which could be good or bad. I'd rather stay at the larger hospitals for the first 5 years for the experience.

NC is Fort Bragg.

The hospital at Fort Bragg is Womack Army Medical Center and in San Antonio it's on Fort Sam Houston and it's Brooke Army Medical Center. Can't speak for Womack but my OB-GYN is over at Brooke and Brooke is LOVELY.

Thanks for Rose3721, Jeckrn and Carlinapooh. Appreciate your reply very much. I would like to go to Water Reed (DC)if they ask me, while other places are fine.My recruiter told me that new nurse will get great training in Army. If you guys know about this, please share with me, thanks.

Also "I will have a ICU training after i start my active duty, which maybe 6month or 1 year. Do they count it into my three years or not"

The reason I ask is I want to get pregnancy after my three year services.

Do you have the ICU course guarantee in your contract? If it is not in writing you might not get it, but the Army will attempt to get you what you want. The 1 year ADSO for the course is concurrent with the 3 yr ADSO for coming on active duty. As far as pregnancy goes that is not a issue in the Army, I work with several soldiers right now who are pregnant. But I do believe that pregnancy can delay your ICU course and might even void the clause for it.

Hi Jeckrn.I did not make the guarantee. I would like to fully involve my service and prepare to be pregnancy after that, although looks like pregnancy is ok in army. Thanks for your reply and make me clear.
