Greetings! I am a RN with about 1 years medsurg experience looking to apply for FY 2017 to the Navy for direct accession. Anyone else out there working on their packet or that have already submitted it? Please feel free share your experiences thus far, desired duty stations and any valuable info. Thanks!

congrats! 3 months to Scroll. I think I spoke to the detailer the week after I was selected. My friend spoke to the detailer the next day.

The process depends on you and your recruiter. Some people it takes 6 months, and others it takes much longer. I wouldn't count on anything less than 6 months though, and that's being generous.

Everyone will tell you that you need one year of BSN experience before you apply, but I will tell you otherwise. You MUST have 90 days off orientation to get credentialed. I do not have my CCRN, but have been told it's likely I will work in ICU because ICU is short staffed.

I was told prior service is favorable, only because you know what you are getting in to. A new nurse, new to the Navy, new to the command may have a harder time coping than someone who has a little nursing experience, or background in the military.

I would not stress your GPA.

Hello! I see that this is the most active post on Navy nursing, so I thought maybe I could get some questions answered here. I am currently enlisted in the Army reserve (with a little over 3 years of active duty before joining the reserve) and I am one semester away from graduating with my BSN. I was considering joining the Army Nurse Corps but I wanted to see what the Navy had to offer as well. Here are some of my questions:

- How long does the process usually take from talking to a recruiter to actually commissioning? (I know it probably differs from one applicant to another, just

an average)

My whole process took about a year. I started talking to my recruiter in June 2017 and in June 2018 I swore in and took my oath. But it definitely varies based on when you apply and what speciality your applying to.

- As a new nurse I would have to apply for med-surge I assume. If the process takes about a year, and let's say I worked in critical care and receive a CCRN

certification in the civilian sector, will I still only be able to receive a billet for med-surge? Or would the board look at putting me in a critical care slot?

They will place you where you have experience at the time of application so if you only have med surg experience when you apply that's all your can apply for. Once you get in and work for a bit then you can try and switch speaclities.

- Will my past military service be looked upon favorably?

I can't really answer this because I came in as a civilian but I would assume it would look good.

- My cumulative GPA is a 3.35, is this competitive?

It is definitely enough to make you eligible. I got in with a 3.5 gpa but I know of people getting in with a 3.0. It seems like they care more about previous experience and how good of references you have than your gpa.

I know that it would benefit me greatly to get experience in the civilian sector before joining the military as a nurse. However, my contract in the reserve is about to be up in a few months and I would like to not have a significant break in service.

You do have to work before you can apply unless you did direct access through nursing school. My recruiter said the minimum experience was six months but she told me most competitive applicants have a year or experience.

Long time lurker, found out I was selected on July 3rd. Just waiting on official letter and scroll. Anyone else recently heard about their approval? Anyone get their letters yet? I know its been a long road and being prior enlisted I am fully familiar with hurry up and wait but this is killin' me!

Also received the unofficial phone call on 03JUL. (1945 ED/Trauma applicant) One month later, no letter or follow up. Hey @deekay08, hear anything yet?

I was also selected on July 3rd. My recruiter said that scroll takes awhile. It usually takes a month to as long as 3-6 months. I was selected for Critical Care. I was really hoping to leave before the year ends. It's definitely a hurry up and wait deal.

Last week I was told I can begin negotiating for orders. Still no letter or anything else. Let me know if you get any updates.

UPDATE: Detailer contacted me this morning, got a September ODS date and assignment to NH Camp Pendleton. Orders cut in 7-10 days.
