Hi there-
I am looking to find any ACNP who works M-F 9-5 ish??? And to find out what setting it's in. I am on the FNP track but acute care is where my heart is and clinicals start soon & I must be decided before then. I have two small children and really desire to have a similar schedule to them when are in school which is why I want to avoid holidays and many weekends. My husband's work requires him to travel a lot and there's always a chance he may be gone on any holiday. We decided that our kids need one parent home for holidays and most weekends as we live in an area without family support. Is it possible for me to have both worlds: working in Acute Care without 12 hour shifts, weekends & holidays??? Or should I stick with FNP because of the higher chance I get the schedule that works for our family and hope I like it?

Much depends:
1. Can you relocate for this type of position?
2. If the answer is no, then what is available in your area?
3. Join your state's APRN organization and network.
4. Ask at your school.

Plenty of ACNP's work Mon-Fri. Those who work for Cardiology, Neurosurgery, General Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, and many other subspecialties typically only work during the daytime during weekdays. My first position right after ACNP school was working with a Hospitalist and Physiatrist in an acute in-patient rehabilitation unit with Spinal Cord Injury patients with occasional PM&R consults at an adjoining full service general hospital. I worked Mon-Fri from 7:30 AM to around 4 PM, off weekends and holidays. Hated that schedule because the weekends are the only times I can take care of personal business. To each his/her own I guess.

I'm a new FNP working in primary care. Schedule: Mon-fri, 2 days in a week: 11-7, the other 3 days: 9-5. I also work 1 Saturday/month 1/2 day(will work 1/2 day any day of the week on the day I work the Saturday). I'm hoping for a 4 day, 10 hour shift with no weekend coverage.
With my current schedule above, I can drop my son off to school in the morning and help with homework later in the day.

Just today I saw ACNP jobs for orthopedic inpatient, PM&R, and cardiac cath lab which were all Mon-Fri, no weekends or call.
