I am an RN with a little tiny bit of med/surg experience, and really interested in mom/baby work. For those of you who've been there, what do you look for in a place to work? I went to an interview recently, and the nurses seemed rather unfriendly, and the RN station cramped. But this is right now the only hospital that is willing to hire someone with no m/b experience. They pay well, and I WOULD get experience in...

how the nurses? ask THEM how they like it????
they know better than anyone.
good luck.
I did email the manager about talking to another RN or 2 about the unit, to get a better feel for the place. She didn't seem to understand my question and told me she would be available for any more questions I may have. I don't want to beat a dead horse or anything, but I emailed her again clarifying my question. If the nurses are too busy or don't want to talk to me, why would I want to work there?
answer: you probably don't.

I'd look elsewhere. It sounds like the manager has a problme herself if she has no idea why you would want to talk to the staff. Sounds like a place NOT to work. When we hire a new nurse with no previous experience, we always start them in mother/baby. That's the only place to start. keep looking and give yourself time. While you're at it, keep up with the med-surg.

Maybe there is a reason she doesn't want you to talk to the staff. Is she, perhaps not the best manager? Does she not trust her staff to present the unit in a good light? What is the REAL reason she doesn't want you to talk to staff members?
This is the email I just received:
/That is not something we do at this hospital. Again, if you have particular
questions I would be more than happy to answer them./
I don't understand? Is this a standard rule at hospitals? I am REALLY put off.
walk away.. the places i worked the staff interviewed new potential employees, too. this sounds shady.
