Accepted into the VA VALOR nursing residency program!!!

Published

I'm finishing my 3rd year right now and I was accepted into the VALOR program. I was active duty Air Force for 8 years so I'm familiar with the government's idea of health care.

Is anyone else in this program? It sounds so much better than the civilian hospital's nurse apprentice programs. I just hope I'm not going to be too stressed out caring for 6 of my own patients. The most I've had during clinicals is 3.

Any suggestions or tips for me as I go through the new employee hiring process? I had my employment blood work done today and have my physical on Monday.

I'd like to hear from others who are in the VALOR program or who know about it. I'm worried about not having a clue of what I'm doing. How do you figure out how to get organized to get everything done? That is my biggest fear. :uhoh21:

sorry for the late reply.

The experience so far has been nothing but golden stars. It was bumpy at first and got thrown around a few time from preceptor to preceptor, yet I learned a lot from each one of those people that I spent time with. I just am about to graduate and doing a couple shifts every week till I do.

For us we had the nursing educator come to our school and I reluctantly went not thinking much about it. The dead line occurred during our spring break, so while most of the other students went off on awesome vacations I decided to do the long application, and in the end it paid off in some of the best "clinical time" I've had while in nursing school.

I am part of the Las Vegas, NV VA system. I hope to either start there when I graduate or another VA.

Hi puravida. I just applied to the VALOR program here in LV and have a couple questions, since it feels like they don't give you much info after turning in your package. 1. How long after deadline do they inform you of your status?2. Do you know the selection process? GPA, veterans preference, cover letter/resume...etc..3. Is there an interview process?4. What are the work hours? I'm excited about this program but competition with 20 others for 4-6 open spots is nerve-wrecking.

1. From memory it didn't take that long, but the starting process took a while as with any federal job would. If you didn't get it they will notify you by mail. Probably the only employer in the nation that still does that.

2. Selection process: I don't know what makes you a better candidate over another person, yet veteran preference doesn't apply to this program from what I was told.

3. For my selection there wasn't an interview

4. For the first 400 hours I was on a medical surgical floor which consisted of 8h shifts. Only two-three departments have 12 h shifts.

5. Good luck.

Deadline was May 1st and I got a phone call for an interview on May 4th. My interview is next Thursday May 10th. So far things are running smoothly. Not too bad of a wait. I'm hoping the interview is to offer me a position, since you said you did not get an actual interview :) Thanks for replying back to me!

No problem. I have no secrets for this, but remember that our vets deserve the best and even at their worst we give our best. Good luck.
