Accepted! oh wait not accepted yet

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Anyone experiencing that not so good feeling when you open up a letter from a college where the first line reads congratulations on your recent acceptance but then keep reading a few lines down and find the please call us to determine your placement in the nursing class.

After finishing pre-recs I get to find out that there are even more certain prerecs only offered at that school that are part of their "core curriculum" and wouldn't be able to start clinicals most likely until 2 maybe 3 more semesters. What's weird is that students would take these courses their first year so I don't see why I couldn't take them while I'm in their program. I thought I researched these programs well enough, but I guess not.

Not too discouraged yet, waiting on a few more schools but this is becoming frustrating. From what I've seen so far, nursing programs are not liking transfer students. I thought maybe I would take one or two classes in the summer if I had to so I could start clinicals in the Fall, but this is a bit much. Venting complete :) anyone else feeling it?

What kind of courses do they want you to take? Any possibility you can take them in the summer before you start the program?

The program I want to get into lists quite a few "co-requisites". While you don't have to get them completed before applying, they strongly advise you to finish them first, so all you take are your nursing classes once you're in.

There are other "module" type courses that you need to take before clinicals (e.g. medical terminology, nursing math, etc.), but they allow you to work on them at your own pace the first 8 weeks of the program. As long as you pass the mandatory quizzes before clinicals, you're set.

Congratulations on getting accepted! Call your nursing advisor and find out exactly what you need to do and make a plan so you're ready :)

I got the same letter! lol, I'm waiting on one more school to find out if I got into their program. I'm a transfer student as well and I have to take their classes before entering the program.

That happened to me in Spring 2009. I opened an email from the school saying congratulations on being accept to [school name]. I waited for my packet to come in the mail and when I opened up the packet, it said that I was accepted to the school of nursing but I would not start Spring 2010 because I was "not clinically ready." I had done all my pre-reqs and I only had like 3 other core classes I had to take. I know the feeling when you get so excited that you got accepted but then you are not starting the nursing program.

So what I did was I talked to my advisor on what classes I needed to take and I specifically asked her if there was any way that I could start the nursing program Spring 2009. She said "no" and it just kind of made me mad but I understood why. I'm happy that I asked her though because a week later, I got a phone call from the someone in the nursing department and he wanted to know if I wanted to start in Spring 2009, and I did.

So my main point is if you decide to go to that school, ask your advisor if there is any way you could start sooner. The worst they could say it no.

This happened to me at a school and they accepted me and then said yes you may be able to start in Fall 2012 but you need to take Pathophysiology first.... and go through a separate nursing school application in the fall. I am frustrated because Patho was not listed anywhere on their set of pre-reqs and they also want me to basically take this course at their school without guarantee of getting into their nursing program even though I've been accepted to the university. Patho is normally a course that you take once you are in nursing school and some schools don't require Pathophysiology, they require Pathopharmacology. I'm debating on whether or not I should go this route or stick it out to apply to other programs.... Who knew there would be this many loop holes applying to nursing school!
