Accepted Columbia University's ETP student-meet-n-greet

Published

Hi there,

Thought I would start a Columbia thread for all of us who were eagerly waiting for that acceptance letter in the mail last week. Guess you can call this the meet-n-greet and maybe wear like a sticker with our screen names so we can recognize each other during the Visiting Day (ok, might look a bit goofy) but hey, what a way to start off our nursing careers together at Columbia.

I was estactic when i opened that letter, seemed like a thin envelope and was prepared for the worst, and then read the first line! I can't wait and indeed it was a life changing letter for both me and my wife, who also got accepted!! I also got into my first choice of specialty, Nurse Anesthesia, and getting into that program without ICU experience (besides being a nursing assistant in the ER and neurosurg unit as an undergrad) is just simply overwhelming. It took the whole weekend to sink in, and now, I'm psyched! I look forward to meeting all of you and enduring the next 12 months of craziness starting in June together.

See you on Visiting Day!! :balloons:

Best,

Charlie

Just FYI to someone upthread -- you probably won't be able to switch into CNM-I'm not sure why, but anaesthesia and CNM don't like to take new ppl after the initial round of acceptances. Yay to all of you!

Awww man! I'm so jealous, what a community you guys are creating already! I feel left out! LOL:rolleyes:

Are there any decided Yallies out there?????

Don't feel left out lovingpecola!! You're always welcomed here in the Columbia circle, but of course, you'll be even more welcomed if you decide to ditch Yale for Columbia! ;) jk. It's such an accomplishment to be accepted into not just one great program, but two. So, I understand that the decision is quite tough on you and I'm sure you'll make the best suited decision when time comes. Definitely let us know how the Yale program goes and we'll do the same I'm sure, and again best of luck and CONGRATS!

Awwww thanks!! We'll be so helpful to next years applicants as we will be able to explain our different programs and they will have a better idea to make their choice!!!

hey lovingpecola,

i'm about 85% Yale right now--maybe we should start our own thread--even though we are so welcome here on the Columbia thread;) !

Sound like a plan?

Hi, my friend and I are currently Columbia ETP students. Just a bit of advice, if anyone got accepted to Yale, GO TO YALE!!! Also, nobody here can figure out how we got accepted. This school likes to accept people with little to no direct nursing experience so that they can shape you. Which works out well for most of us! I just transfered from the Neonatal program to Midwifery, although Im not sure if Im going to stay for the Masters part of the program. But if you have questions, feel free to ask either of us. My (I'm Holly) email is [email protected] and Shani's is [email protected]

Good luck to ya'll!

Wow. That was frank...would either of you care to give any examples or details about why you're unsatisfied? Thanks!

bics...yep, let's do it!

Hi there. Quick question on behalf of myself and all the others lurking about who ARE going to be coming to Columbia...Is there any constructive advice you could give to us on ways to navigate some of the difficulties of this program (and what are the difficulties?)? Is there anything you know now that you wish you had known when you first started? Is it just the neonatal track that is in so much turmoil?

Also, isn't the whole point of all of the direct entry programs to let people with no nursing experience become nurses? The whole reason that I applied was to be "shaped" into a nurse, so I'm hoping it will work out well for me too! I guess I'm just a bit confused by your comments. Any more details would be much appreciated!

Best to you too!

Shani or Holly-

I was wondering if you could elaborate a bit on why you would not recommend the program. Do you have friends at Yale that are much happier?

Is the initial year horrible or is it just the specialty areas that are bad? I was accepted to the anesthesia specialty - have you heard anything specifically about that program?

I am sure that all of us future Columbia students would appreciate any advice/information that you would be willing to give.

Thanks again!!

Hey Holly!!!

Elizabeth from your 5x5 here. Glad to see one of my girls on the board!

Everyone, I'll post another screed against Columbia later - have to run right now.

Nevermind, I have time now. Here's a list of crappy things about Columbia...

The financial aid guy - the package they give you is good, but EVERYONE I know has had trouble getting it at some point. He's unhelpful, to put it mildly.

Most of the professors are not good, at least in the first year. I went to UC Santa Cruz, which is not known as a dazzling school (it's good, but hardly Ivy League) and the ratio of good:crappy profs was much more favorable there.

Personally, I'm not loving NY. That may be just me, but I've visited here a million times to see family and always wanted to live here. It's not all you think it is. It certainly ain't Sex and the City...

I really don't feel they're teaching us that well. I know the goal is not to produce RNs, it's to produce NPs. That having been said, the VAST majority of us will be working as RNs at some point, and some of us (neonatal and anaesthesia) HAVE to. I don't think we're prepared.

There's other stuff, but now I really do have to go. Holly? Over to you.

About Columbia & Yale -- they say they prefer/require one year obstetric/L&D experience for the midwifery program. Have you found that to be true of the people they accept? I might wait if so but I want to apply right from undergrad. Have most people you're in school with worked in their specialty before?
