Accepted Columbia University's ETP student-meet-n-greet

Published

Hi there,

Thought I would start a Columbia thread for all of us who were eagerly waiting for that acceptance letter in the mail last week. Guess you can call this the meet-n-greet and maybe wear like a sticker with our screen names so we can recognize each other during the Visiting Day (ok, might look a bit goofy) but hey, what a way to start off our nursing careers together at Columbia.

I was estactic when i opened that letter, seemed like a thin envelope and was prepared for the worst, and then read the first line! I can't wait and indeed it was a life changing letter for both me and my wife, who also got accepted!! I also got into my first choice of specialty, Nurse Anesthesia, and getting into that program without ICU experience (besides being a nursing assistant in the ER and neurosurg unit as an undergrad) is just simply overwhelming. It took the whole weekend to sink in, and now, I'm psyched! I look forward to meeting all of you and enduring the next 12 months of craziness starting in June together.

See you on Visiting Day!! :balloons:

Best,

Charlie

All white shoes are a must and they are being very strict about it this coming year. Get yourself a pair of white dansko clogs. They are unbelievably comfy and easy to wipe down and clean up when they get dirty.

So will an all white pair of New Balance work?

Alright ya'll... a new chapter in our lives is starting in a few short days. Good luck, and I look forward to seeing ya'll on move-in day.

For those of you currently in the program:

I have a question about summer classes--how big of a deal is it to miss a class day (not a clinical day)? My sister just had a baby today (yea!!!!) and I really want to go out and meet him sometime in June or July, but she lives in Boulder so I would need to take at least one day off from school in order to do it. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance. See the rest of you next week!

First, congrats to you and ur family! As for the absence thing, there was an email sent on May 12 about this. It says that,

"Attendance during didactic coursework is not required although highly recommended. However, we require students to attend all scheduled clinical experiences."

Theres also a deadline on June 9 to notify them about known absences. Check ur PM. I'm forwarding you the email.

Alright ya'll. I'm a NY resident starting TOMORROW! See ya'll next week. That weekend lets all celebrate!!! (that's if we dont have 50 chapters to read by monday... which might just be the case..lol) anyone have any ideas?

I would try to avoid missing physio or physical assessment, but the rest aren't so much necessary. Attendance sheets are OCCASIONALLY passed around, but I wouldn't worry about it.

Hey guys--thanks for the info, and the congratulations! My nephew is so cute... I was planning to only miss a Monday or Tuesday or maybe a Friday, meaning I would be able to make all clinical days b/c I know it would be a big deal to miss those, and now I know about Physio and physical assessment. I'll try to make it work somehow...

Thanks again!

Hey, what classes are you guys taking over the summer? I heard your schedule is different than ours was. I might be able to tell you which days would be best to miss if I knew...

Monday: Science of Nursing Practice, Physical Assessment.

Tuesday: Topics in Nursing Practice, Science of Nursing Practice in the Community, and Advanced Physio.

Wednesday and Thursday: Clinicals

Friday: Pharmacology.

Maybe that means Friday is really the only day that would be ok to miss...

Meh, you could miss PhysAss if you needed to. Just pay attention in lab. I missed a bunch of physass and I still passed, it was just kind of tough doing the practical. I would recommend AGAINST missing physass lab, but if you miss the lecture it's probably okay.

I've been hearing a lot of bad things about Columbia . . . they give no aid, it costs a fortune . . . what are your experiences?

Fin Aid: They gave me a 28K scholarship, stafford loans, and private loans which completely covered my costs for tuition and living expenses.

Of course it costs a fortune, it's not only a private school but an ivy league. If you want a cheap school you definitely don't want to go here. I have about 60K in loans from this past year alone. Public schools are the way to go if you want a good deal. I went to public school for my first degree and loved it. There were a few reasons why I didn't go to public school for grad, mainly because at the time I applied to programs there was only 1 public school offering a direct msn program in my state (UCSF) and also I really wanted to move to NYC.

I don't know if that addresses the "bad things" you are hearing. Hope it helps.

Thanks for your post; it was very helpful. I went to a private school undergraduate and they, due to their large endowment, had terrific financial aid. On the other hand, I have heard from some people that although the Ivies have large endowments, Columbia and Yale accelerated MSN programs are stingy with their aid and expect students to take out monstrous private loans (which, as a second-degree student, isn't feasible for me). So I'm just trying to get a more concrete idea of what people think of the various financing options offered to them at their schools, in particular the private ones. The info that scholarships are even available at Columbia is news to me, and that sounds encouraging. So thanks! Anyone else want to share, feel free. . .
