Hello everyone! i love reading the threads. I recently passed my Hesi pre-nursing exam, it was 4.5 hrs long! i passed, thank God! I decided to go my college's nursing bldg and look around, i felt so overwhelmed. I've waited so long to start a program and now it's finally happening-i should start in Fall/August. I'm just thinking about all the sacrifice. I hear everybody talking about all the hours and burnout they experience while being in the program. I knew all of this when i first started going to college for nursing. I want to become a nurse but not at the expense of my family-i'm a little worried it will be too much for us. Is it normal to feel this way before starting after waiting for so long? Will it be different once i start? Is there a nurse or nursing student so organized, so physically fit, so optimistic and so determined to change lives on here that can share something encouraging about nursing school and nursing profession? or is it really about being burnt out? Thanks :redbeathe
Congratulations!!I applied this year for the admission in Fall 2010 but I'm so stressed out and nervous as to if i'd get in or not.. btw, which school did you guys get into/ or attending right now??
Hello! so you're right on the brink of getting in huh? i know how that feels-very nerve racking. I live in Southern California & the nursing program i applied for is by lottery & GPA, so you only apply once, all the other colleges are every application period. i'm starting to get real excited. Does the college you are applying to make each one of you take a pre-entrance exam? I think all schools had to by 09. Good luck in getting in, best wishes for you friend.:)
You will do amazing! You will be very focused on having superb time management skills that it will flow alot easier than some of your classmates. For me- I find it very doable (and not hard and I do go to a challenging program!) and take a laid back approach as I can, I am the only one who is looking up while listening in lecture vs getting a hand cramp writing everything down. I find it more relaxing and I retain more. You will find your groove.
I have 3 children, 5, 3 and I just had baby in December. So I have a newborn who is not sleeping thru the nite, sounds like a nitemare but with EXCELLENT organization of your personal life, your professional life will glide by. Start with getting a full physical to make sure your on top of your game! (will make you feel empowered to know you are healthy...)
I do not watch tv, I do not waste time on anything like that right now. I am totally fine with that and in fact, find it less stressful anyway :) I have found that listening to ipod lectures while ou I run in the morning before I get the kids up and then myself to school is a GREAT way to start the day. I also am on cds, and hypno cds, for self esteem and etc, it really helps) I am SUPAWOMAN and SO.ARE.YOU
Sounds like you and I are on the same page! i agree with you about health & doing the impossible-see it's someone like you that makes my day. You have children & still value the importance of self! thanks for the encouragement, several things you mention i already do or have had done, so your reply brings confirmation to me that i can do it-i just have to carry over all those habits(good) into my schooling and i will be fine. Thank YOu xoxxo:redbeathe
I think it's normal to be overwhelmed at some point(s) during the program. I'm two semesters into an accelerated program; semesters are 15 wks long and I find I'm overwhelmed every time at week 7. Worked the same way in my undergrad. I think I start to feel like the wave of work is coming over my head and I'm fixing to drown...then, amazingly, I find I'm on the downhill slide of the semester and it's all going to be fine.
Rule One: Don't beat yourself up for not being perfect. Even though that worked well for many of us in other areas of our lives, nursing school is different. Not only will you enjoy it more if you drop the expectations of perfection, you may even learn more. I remind myself that once my nurse practitioner certificate is hanging on the office wall, no one is going to ask me what my grade was in Pharm II !

I also am very health conscious and make protein bars, shakes and fruit n veggie smoothies to give me a power kick. I also take vitamin B-12 injections, liquid vitamins etc. Taking care of your health will allow you to do ANYTHING. I take 3mg melatonin at nite so that the few bits of sleep I get are deep sleep (and then the baby wakes me up...)
You will do amazing
edit- I also firmly believe in MYSELF, I am superwoman and so ARE YOU. I can do anything I set my mind on, I am relaxed and confident and SO CAN YOU BE. (I also listen to meditative relaxation cds, and hypno cds, for self esteem and etc, it really helps) I am SUPAWOMAN and SO.ARE.YOU
