I am graduating in May with a degree in Computer Science and a minor in Information management from CUNY. I am applying for accelerated BS Nursing programs at CUNY and one at NYU. I like the NYU program because they have the one year in Nursing Informatics for the Masters and you get well connected to their network and resources. Also, their program focuses on building technologies and entrepreneurship vs. Just nursing with EHR management.

My main two questions are:
Anyone ever done a one year nursing program after having a bachelor's already?
Any input about NYU's master's in Nursing informatics?
Thanks in advance!

30.
Sorry, but why are you trying to do RN. You have CS degree. You can work in hospital IT dept without RN degree???
I am RN but i need tech related degree not sure if i should go for CS or MIS. About your age too.
I work there already. I want to go into Informatics. NYU is really the school that encompasses the reason why I want to pursue Informatics in a Nursing capacity. I want to build products that improve patient care and manage them.
I would recommend any school that has a good dept. The school sent you is really good in those fields. CS is very theory based. MIS is applicable.
Thanks. Recently I went to a CS bridge program that offers masters in CS to non-CS background students. The same school also offers general MIS.
I am sooo confused in picking the program. Can’t decide between CS and MIS. Because i don’t want to pick the wrong one. One thing is for sure. I been reading the job postings a lot and they are asking quite technical skills (data base skills, programming) for informatics/analyst positions.
If u had not done CS and u were a nurse....would u have picked MIS or CS? I want to pick the best one for future and be very marketable so i wont have tough time finding a job.

I am a nurse that then earned a MS in computer science. Whether you pick a MIS or CS degree really depends on what you want to do. I wanted to work for a vendor in R&D to actual build and design the systems that are installed in hospitals. Someone has to design them - better a nurse than not. Not that you need a CS degree to do that, but you are more likely to be hired if you do because you are hired as a developer. There are significantly few positions for informatics nurses in R&D development. MIS is much less technical but more geared towards implementation/installation/sales. CS degree is also very mathematical and science oriented. Twelve credits for calculus plus other math classes. For some, that would a challenge or something they would not be interested in. MIS versus CS - depends on what you want to do. R&D developer positions usually required a CS degree or CS experience.
For JMR85112: Going for a nursing degree is also challenging. It is a lot of science, but a different type of science (A&P, micro, chemistry) and it is very people oriented. If you want to learn more about healthcare, there are some other options. I have seen healthcare informatics MS programs which are geared towards non-clinicians which provides some healthcare education. Also, there is the MS in nursing program geared towards people with BS in another field - you may want to consider that. It prepares you for advanced nursing positions. No easy choice, but you know your situation best.
Hi all,
Update. I got accepted into the 15 month BSN program at CUNY Lehman College. I spoke a leader within the program and she understood what I wanted to achieve as a future RN. Computer Science and Nursing is the future! Also, a Masters in Information System is more attractive than a masters in Nursing Informatics. This what many employees already in the field are schooling me on. So, my next step may be masters in Information Systems.
I don't want to work in IT ONLY. I already do within a hosp. I want to be nurse that uses technology to improve the healthcare system for patients and my future colleagues.
I want to add that I have CS degree and I took A&P and all the pre-reqs for nursing school already through the summer and winter. I scored mostly A and Bs.
JMR85112,
Congrats on your acceptance into nursing program. You will do great. Do you have facebook or something? I want to keep in touch with you for career basis and future opportunities. Thanks.
