ABSN course load (possible with kids?)

Published

Hi,

I'm planning on starting my prereqs next quarter in the hopes of applying to UW in fall 2016. I have 2 and 5 year old boys and I'm worried about the course load. Are there any current/past ABSN students that could enlighten me? I can work all day in class/clinicals but I can't spend hours every night studying since I need to be a Mom too. Can anybody give me a sense of whether it's possible to stay on top of studying/homework mostly during the day? I'm trying to get this done while keeping a happy life balance!

I appreciate any insights.

Julie

Hi I graduate in 6 days, yes it is possible with kids I have two as well. However I cant say that you will be able to accomplish everything that needs to be done during the day. ABSN programs are just that accelerated. Its going to take a lot . Of dedication, time management and lots of loooong nights and early mornings. I usually wait until everyone is sleep in my home then I study until 2 or 3 sometimes four in the morning, then I am up before they get up to study or prepare for the day. However I have only gotten two B's my whole program. Workload requires you to study everyday to ensure you keep up, but also depends on how your program is run and you wont know that until you are in the program. Good luck you can do it! If I can do it so can you.

I did it with kids. When I started, I had a kindergartener and a preschooler. When I finished, I had a first grader, a kindergartener, and was pregnant. It wasn't easy, but I did it.

My advice is make sure you get yourself dedicated study time. When my younger son was in preschool, I got two mornings a week to myself that I dedicated to studying without interruptions. Not a lot of time, but it was my guaranteed time that I could use for longer stretches of studying. I also carved out little pockets of time here and there. For example, I got e-books rather than paper textbooks, and put them on my phone. That way, I could read a bit here and there, like when waiting in the pick-up line at school, waiting for the school bus, or while riding in the car when my husband was driving. Yes, I did study after the kids were in bed, too, and to be honest there were a few times I had to pull an allnighter to get a project or paper done, but there really weren't many of those.

You can do it, but you might need to let some other things go. My house was often messy (not dirty, just messy), and we did take-out and frozen meals more than usual. My husband pitched in to help with laundry, grocery shopping, etc. You just have to be disciplined about using your daytime study time to STUDY. When you have a house to run, it is easy to get caught up in all the other chores. My answer to that was to drop my son off at preschool and then go to a coffee shop with my laptop. I'd have breakfast and study. Then sometimes I'd go to the library later in the morning. That removed the temptation for me to try to get household things done.
