About to start at FB County Jail

Published

Hi! I was just hired on with the Fort Bend County jail to work the night shift. I was wondering if anyone else on here works there or has worked there or in any other county jail. Any tips or advice? I start my training next Thursday night in booking. I am stressing over getting lost in this place. I tried to memorize which halls I walked down to get to a certain place and even drew a little map but looking at it now I have no idea what I'm looking at! This will be my first job as an LVN. I'm excited to start working and I hope I enjoy corrections. Thanks in advance for any tips!

I've work at the prison and jail level. Don't worry, you will become familiar with the map and wonder how you ever got lost in the first place. It just takes practice and don't be afraid to ask for directions. One of the biggest things to get used to is not only do you have to worry about their health but you also have to keep in mind that this population will try their best to get everything they can from you using manipulative tactics. Fake seizures in order to be sent to the ER, fake allergies to food because they don't like what's served. They will say they have back issues to get extra bed mats or say they have anemia to get extra blankets. Remembering to be firm, fair, and consistent helps. You really have be a detective and your bull-crap meter needs to be on high. Never do them any favors. I almost got in trouble because I was going to give a fragile diabetic patient a candy to raise his blood sugar. The officer said it would be considered passing contraband to an inmate. My co-worker explained to me that if I were to give this patient candy when his blood sugar was low then he would try to make it low to get candy. That makes sense now. I liked my time in corrections. I learned so much. It's a great experience. A great article to read is "Downing a Duck." It's written by an inmate who was able to manipulate his way into escaping. It's really helpful in providing insight into their manipulation tactics.

Thank you!! That is really helpful☺️☺️
