AAS RN to BSN or Accelerated BSN?

Published

Hello All,

I'm nearly done with my prerequisites for BMCC's AAS RN program but have a question as to whether I should continue here or fulfill the remaining prerequisites for entry to an accelerated BSN. I'll be done with the prerequisites for the AAS at the end of the Fall 2011 semester and perhaps begin the program in Fall 2012. If I shoot for the accelerated BSN, I will be done with prerequisites after the summer semester 2012 at the very soonest and likely won't start the program till summer or fall 2013, depending on the institution.

I already have a Bachelors degree in another discipline.

My thinking is that I could pursue the AAS RN, get to working as an RN a bit sooner. Then, I would fulfill the remaining classes for the BSN while I'm working.

Since I'm totally new to all of this, I was wondering whether there were any expert opinions out there.

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

I also already have a BS in another area and will be going back to school soon. I don't have an expert opinion in this, but I am choosing NOT to go the accelerated route (15 months to BSN/RN) program because I have a family and other commitments that need my attention. Plus I do not want to feel rushed getting through school and stressed out taking 3-5 classes plus clinicals at the same time. So, I'm going to apply for the 3-year program that gives me my AAS/RN in 2 years and my BSN after a 3rd year. It's slower paced and will fit into my current lifestyle better. I'm taking my pre-reqs now and hoping to be admitted Fall 2012. Fingers crossed!

Hi KJ

Thanks for the responce.

What school are you applying to if you don't mind my asking? I wasn't aware of these types of programs. Sounds interesting.

I am applying to a dual program between Walters State Community College and ETSU in TN. My 3rd year includes all online classes, too, so I can work as an RN if I want to while still continuing my studies to obtain my BSN.
