AAS in Nursing and Nursing Program

Hi everyone!

For the past few days, I have been wondering like seriously what is the main difference between the AAS in Nursing and the Nursing program of a community college. Can someone please shed some light with this issue I have, I am really getting frustrated on which one to pursue. :crying2:

Personally, I will choose the AAS in Nursing basically because while I am waiting to be accepted at ASUs (Arizona State University) BSN program I have the opportunity to earn some money (being an RN at a local hospital), also I guess there is no waiting list for the AAS in Nursing program, am I right on this?

Currently, I am completing some general education and MCCD pre-requisites at Rio Salado Community College; when I am done with the FON, CHM, and BIO classes with Rio Salado CC, I will be transferring either to GateWay Community College or Chandler-Gilbert Community College.

So my questions are:

is AAS in Nursing and the Nursing program different or the same?

is there also a waiting list for AAS in Nursing? If so, approximately how many months?

I hope there is no waiting list for the AAS in Nursing because if there is I will have to apply ASAP!

I will really appreciate your helpful responses , thank you very much!

I am in the AAS program with Excelsior college. The main difference w/their programs (AAS and ADN) are just in the elective credits involved. My electives can be more liberal arts for the AAS (I have things Nutrition and Forensic Anthropology which Excelsior does not consider "science related") and for the ADN they accept science related electives.

The nursing coursework should be the same.

What school's AAS in Nursing are you speaking of?

If you are speaking of Excelsior's AAS in nursing it is a nursing degree, clearly. There is no wait list, but you have to be able to teach yourself and work through the classes on your own. Depending on what pre-requisites you have completed you may not have much general education left to complete but that can vary. I suggest you do some reading on the Excelsior program if that is what you are referring to, especially the state licensing aspects on it and then ask questions after you have a better understanding to what it is. There are numerous threads on Excelsior if you search

Hi AzariJ! I am referring to the AAS in Nursing program of GateWay Community College and Chandler-Gilbert Community College whom both are sister colleges of the Maricopa Community Colleges here at Arizona.

The general education that I have already taken are the ff:

ENG101,ENG102 (First Year Composition); MAT187,PSY230 (Mathematical Studies[MA/CS]); and PSY101 (Social and Behavioral Science).

As beachie said above, an AAS is pretty much a difference in credit distribution. Essentially an AAS, AS, and ADN are the same thing they are all associates degrees in nursing. You might try posting in the Arizona schools posting area for information regarding those specific schools, or the school websites for information about wait lists and/or admission/application requirements.

Good Luck
