Today is my first day of med surg II class and 19 new people are in here retaking the course. I am terrified of that number. I am ready to graduate in Aug 2008 and DO NOT want to push that date back. I know this is an intensely difficult class. I saw you on the post and it seems you are very helpful. I began reseraching the saunders books you recommended and a series called incredibly easy. However, as you can suspect, I am on a tight budget and can't afford to buy a book for every topic. Also, I am feeling overwhelmed by the number of books there are for a given topic. I was wondering if you could recommend a comprehensive study guide that contains these topics and help me to memorize for 5 tests and a comprehisive final.

You should really get the saunder's book...I love mine!! It has a consice review of all the major concepts, since it is an NCLEX review book. This book has really helped me when I have been in a pinch. I think this book is around $40 and worth every penny. Good luck!

Saunders Comprehensive Review is a good book and I'll also second that suggestion.
That being said, please keep in mind that you don't really know the reasons why these 19 ppl are repeating. Not being aware of their study habits, personal situations, or drive and ambition, can make those numbers seem overwhelming. Sometimes, ppl who are repeats bring it on themselves. Sometimes they are folks who just need that extra semester to really grasp the material. In our class, we've had several repeats join us over the past few semesters. Sometimes after getting to know them, it's understandable why they're with us. Sometimes life has gotten in the way of their having a smooth semester. Whatever the reason, it's been helpful to just take our own schooling one day at a time and keep trudging through.
Don't waste too much effort stressing over what's happened to others. Spend that energy and time studying and working toward a passing grade for yourself. My suspicion is that if there were 19 who are repeating, there were many more who went on to pass. Keep that thought in mind!!

If the school is recommending books for this course, then the school's libary should carry these books so you should still be able to have access to them even if you can't afford to purchase them yourself.

I have never bought all my required textbooks either. Your library is a great resource, and i think they have to carry all required and recommended textbooks. These are usually on short-term loan (2-4 hours).
However, your public library is also a good resource, and you should always check to see if they carry your required and recommended textbooks as well. Those you can usually take out for several weeks

I have used Sanders comprehesive review for NCLEX-RN since the first day of NS... All A's and one B+ on exams. I highly recommend it!
