AA degree in nursing question

Published

I currently am a biology major and will be graduating soon with my bachelors in biology. However, I failed a bunch of science classes (I havent taken actual prenursing classes yet). I know that nursing school looks primarily at the nursing prereqs, but what if instead I apply for for an accelerated nursing school at a university, I actually apply for the AA degree in nursing at a community college? What if I DID fail a prenursing class and applied for a nursing school at a community college, will they not accept me or is it easier to get in than an actual nursing school from a university?

It depends entirely on the school. While it might seem obvious that community college academic standards might not be as strict as those at 4-year colleges and universities, some community college nursing programs have so many applicants for a limited number of "slots" that they have to be extremely selective, in some cases more selective than some BSN programs. I suggest you talk directly to schools that you are interested in, and see what they have to say about your situation.

It's also not necessarily true that nursing schools look "primarily at the nursing prereqs." That, too, varies among schools.

Best wishes for your journey!

I agree you have to look at the specific requirements for admission for the schools you are considering. I am applying for 3 different schools......1 is based on a point system that ONLY considers your 4 science pre reqs and your entrance exam (HESI A2 at that school)

One considers only the GPA of your science courses...but you are awarded points for other prereqs and co reqs and your entrance exam. The 3rd is a BSN program that considers gpa on all prereqs, letters of rec, etc.......

that being said.....the competition for the ADN programs is so much more that the standards are much higher on who is usually accepted and who isn't (GPA wise).....sooo you really should talk with an advisor in the nursing dept in the schools you are considering....they will be glad to give you advice on which route is best!
