A waste?

the way i see it, no education is a waste. if you start going for nursing and decide that medicine is the way you want to go, you can always change later. but at least you will have tried nursing and will never think, what if?

recently i have been accepted to nyu and boston college and now i'm having second thoughts about nursing. is going to nyu for nursing a waste? i was also thinking about doing medicine, but now i'm very confuse. any response will be appreciated.

have you thought about volunteering or working in a hospital?

i just ask b/c there's a huge difference b/w being a doctor and being a nurse.

getting more information on both of these careers would definitely help you in making the right decision for you.

I don't know if I would pay that kind of tuition for a BSN...nursing school isn't like some other careers, where going to a prestigious university can translate into a better paying job upon graduation. If you're already out east, they're probably all expensive, but can't you go to a state school? Now, if you decide to do pre-med, then it makes a difference. I agree with volunteering or shadowing someone, you need to see what nurses and doctors actually do.

I went to NYU for my BA...it's an excellent school, but it's a very expensive one. When I was an undergrad it was about 14-18k/yr--I had scholarships and financial aid but I still paid a good chunk out of pocket. Now I hear it's about 30k/year.

I don't know what your financial situation is like, but for 30k/year, you should be fairly certain of what you want to study...though keep in mind that freshman year won't throw you right into the nursing/medicine fire, but instead you will be ticking off a lot of Liberal Arts requirements and pre-req science courses. Also, many students change their minds about what they want to do that year and even in their sophomore year, because they get exposed to all of these new subjects that they wouldn't have thought of. You could start and if you decide you don't want to do nursing, you could always transfer into the College of Arts & Sciences/Tisch/Gallatin/whatever.

But remember, you're paying 30k/yr. So if you have any serious doubts about NYU, perhaps it's best to go to a CC for a year or two first, and save that money. You could always transfer in later.

And like others have said, having gone to a school like NYU doesn't always give you an automatic edge to your career. I'm living proof :)

well i calculated already and if i do work study i just have to pay back about 20k for all four years. I think I'll stick to nursing and I'll volunteer at the hospital during to summer. Thanks
