A few questions from a UTHSC Houston Fall 2014 applicant

Published

I'm a bit worried since my stats are not good at all. My cumulative score on the Hesi was 88.6 (do they round up btw?)--my lowest section was 78 on vocab. However, I got 90+ on A&P, Math, and grammar. My pre-requisite GPA's are in the lower 3.0.

How much will that 78% on the vocab section hurt me?

Do they look at/consider any non-prerequisite classes taken? My OVERALL GPA from classes I took outside of prereqs is lower than 3.0.

Also, I was wondering if applying late would decrease one's chance of getting in.. I won't be able to apply until this semester is over, which leaves me with only a month until the deadline.

And does anyone know how classes that have been retaken are calculated into the GPA? like do they take the average of both or take the better score?

And what classes are considered when calculating the math/sciences GPA? Like I'm not sure of nutritional sciences would be used to calculate it as well.

They calculate your GPA based on the classes they require. All non-prerequisite work will not be calculated or looked at by the board. The only classes that are used for the science GPA are: AP 1 & 2, Micro, and chemistry. As long as you apply before the deadline you are fine! As far as the HESI goes overall score is important but the most important section is the critical thinking and anatomy! As long as those two areas along with your overall score are high you should be fine!

Other things they consider are how many hours you took each semester. If you were a full time student every single semester that will stand out to them!

You have a good shot! Just keep your hopes up :) feel free to ask any other questions you may have and I will try and answer them the best I can!

Hey thank you so much for replying to this thread. I applied to ut health Houston for fall 2014 and haven't gotten a decision back yet. I applied to Utmb as well and got denied there. I'm really hoping I will get into Houston!
