A Question to Nurses and Nursing Students.. HELP ME!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi AllNurses Community! First off I would like to say that I just joined today so I'm not completly sure I'm posting in the right area.

I am a high school senior. I have pretty much known my whole life that I was made to be a RN. I've just ran into a sticky situation. I get kind of grossed out with blood and veins and wounds. How can I get over this? Now please don't try to tell me "Nursing is just not for you kid". I've tried telling myself that but something in my heart just tells me that Nursing is where I need to go. I'd appreciate any advice you all could give me. Thank you soooo much

Specializes in cardiac/heart failure.

Absolutely don't sweat it. Every nurse gets grossed out by something in the beginning, be it blood, guts, smells, sights, sounds...I almost passed out one day smelling a wound that smelled like a moldy side of old meat, and I actually LOVE blood. A nursing student I saw one time, her pupils dilated when someone changed a pacer dressing - no blood or anything. Just the thought of it messed her up. She looked at me and said, "I can't see so well," and her pupils were like black marbles.

So don't sweat it. Youlll be fine. Desensitization - that's the key.

Your are not a dramatic teenager. The fact that you know what your career is going to be already makes me respect you. I am 21, married with a kid, have been in college for 3 years and I still wonder what the hell I am going to do in my life. I just recently decided to do the LPN program and I am terrified. My problem is the part where I might have to stick the patients with needles when I finally get around to doing clinical. If you know that you want to be an RN than don't let a the blood gross you out of your dreams. :) good luck!!!

Specializes in obstetrics.

I think as you make your way through nursing school, you'll get over your fear. And you sound PASSIONATE in your goal of becoming a nurse. Good luck!

Specializes in Med Surg for now.

I'm currently about to graduate in May from an RN program and there are tons of my peers who can't stand different things, such as snot, mucous aspiration, bowel movements and other bodily fluids, including obstetrics fluids. So trust me when I say that not everything that comes with the field means that you have to do it, except during school, but even I haven't seen that much blood and guts in a two year program on the Med Surg floor. So, if you want to become an RN at least try it and then go into Community Nursing or School Nursing, Psych (there's no blood there), Community Education or even faculty. You can do it. And definitely watch Discovery Health, there's plenty of blood and guts there, I LOVE IT! :heartbeat:nurse:

:)My daughter was the same way, she would vomit over spit!! and every other bodily fluid she was very queezy over most things--even just thinking of things would make her sick or gag, she was terrified to look at a needle, I was really worried when she started working at a Nursing home and started nursing school, but she did great, I was VERY surprised she did so well, don't judge your view on how you are feeling right now, things change, she sees that she is helping others and puts her fears behind her when caring for her patients and you might too, their needs come first. She also believes it is better to give than receive when it comes to needles and unpleasent things---as long as the needle isn't going into her, she is good. Every nurse has somthing that makes them queezy--also there are many types of nursing, just find the right one for you. Good Luck
