A question from a newbie

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hey Guys...brand new here and am seriously considering switching careers and entering nursing school. I have a teeny problem that I want to hear some opinions on though. About 8 years ago, I pled guilty to a misdemeanor misconduct charge and that is on my record. Will this cause me to not be aqble to get licensed? I have always wanted to be a nurse and would hate that this lone mistake in my life would keep me from it.

Any opinions on this?

Call your state board of nursing and tell them what it is, they can tell you. Usually, if it is not a crime against a person, I have heard they are pretty lenient as long as you tell them. Best bet is call and ask someone at BON who would know. Not just the receptionist. Good Luck to you.:balloons:

I looked on my state board's website and they dont even require a criminal background check. It says that some employers will require one, but they dont require one for licensure, I guess? Maybe I will call like you said.

Yeah, your state's BON are the most indicated to answer your question correctly. I would definitely give them a call as they see each case as an individual basis.

If you do a search on this site you will found countless threads like yours (all slightly different or the same) and the answer has always been to contact your state's BON.

Even if they don't require a background check (just like my state) I would still find out before " just in case" there is something very important you need to know before.

Best wishes to you. :)
