A male considering nursing (still in 4 year college)

Published

Hi everyone I'm halfway though the traditional 4 year undergrad college experience and recently discovered that nursing was among the potential career fields in my major (bio). However, I had not heard of anyone within the department that had pursued this. Most either went on to receive Masters/PhD or to med/dental/pharmacy school or some other alternative path. Unsurprisingly, none of my classmates ever gave a thought about it.

I've been lurking this message board for a while now, looking at the various threads posted by other users about this, and I think I've become interested in considering. I have yet to ask my advisors about this because I wanted to do my own research into the field first.

I am slightly aware of the various nursing programs, and it seems like the path for me to follow would be an accelerated BSN of some sort, especially since if I decide now, I can try to accomplish a nice chunk of the pre-reqs.

I know internships exist for other jobs, but are there ways a person interested in nursing can check things out before committing? My volunteer experience in high school was a long time ago, and there were restrictions on what volunteers could do. Nursing really looks like the type of thing I want to do, but I want to make sure.

Now, the other issue here, is that I'm a male and I've read the horror stories of male nurses with great shock and also admiration for those who decided to never give up.

Please give me some areas of myself I should be examining to determine if nursing is right for me.

Also, I'm not sure if I should have posted this in the male forum, but I was also afraid that I would be limiting my pool of replies. Sorry mods!

If you want to know if you want to be a nurse or not, you could shadow a nurse, volunteer and observe, or become a CNA. :twocents:

Specializes in SNU/SNF/MedSurg, SPCU Ortho/Neuro/Spine.

You'll find suport from dudes here bro!

CNA eh? Uh I'm sorry, but I haven't been keen on all the acronyms and abbreviations yet. What is a CNA, and is there some thread burried here with a list of abbreviations/acronyms?

I'm in the same predicament with you man. I'm just not sure if I should finish my 4 years and go into an accelerated BSN instead of knocking out the pre-reqs now and apply for admission from where I am now. :banghead:
