A Graduate Nurse with a failing kidney needs your opinion...

Published

Hello everyone, this will be my first thread so I am a bit nervous. I need your opinion on my situation. I had a kidney transplant over 10 years ago from my sibling and now am going through the rejection process (creatinine 3.3). I am working on getting back on the list for a new kidney, but currently I feel very normal (besides the edema.) I've been going through interviews and recently I realized, what would happen if they check my health status? Will I still be able to get a job? Are they willing to train me, a new nurse, and then wait for me to come back after my transplant? I really want to be a nurse and I am worried that they may not hire me if they find out. Question is would a hospital hire me and/or should I disclose the information when they hire me or should I just let them find out when the time comes for my 2nd transplant? Thank You for your responses.

ever consider being a dialysis nurse?

if you did disclose, i'm thinking they might be a bit more sympathetic...

for me personally, i would disclose...

the main reason being, is because i don't know when to hush up.

but if you do disclose, it will likely blow up in your face.

so to heck with ethics.

you watch out for your best interests.

trust me, any employer will be looking out for theirs.

wishing you the very best.

That's funny, I don't know when to hush up either.:D Yes, I have thought about becoming a dialysis nurse or the Nephrology/Urology unit. That was actually the first floor that I applied for through one of my instructors however, they never called. My instructor actually told them my situation but not the part where the kidney is failing. Thank You for your reply.....by the way "Registered Nut" is too cute.(I love it)

They have no way of checking your health status that I know of. In my experience they will probably do a TB skin test and they may check you for rubella and varicella titers. They will check your Hep B status but they are not going to know you had a transplant or that you have a failing kidney unless you tell them. Now if you think you are going to be going out soon for a transplant, you need to tell them. You will be able to apply for FMLA only after you have worked there for a full 12 months. If you have certain duties that you cannot perform due to your condition, then you have to tell it this up front. They cannot be held liable for your exposure to whatever if it makes you sick when you did not tell them about it in the first place. If you are going to have to be taking sick days to see your doctor or if you know that your health will get worse as your kidney begins to fail more then you have to consider your options at that facility. Do you want to work full time? Do you what to work per diem? Only you can answer those questions based on your medical history and your health care needs. In addition, will you be needing to go on dialysis? Do you currently have insurance coverage and will you be keeping it? Will the hospital pick up coverage for you with this pre existing condition? There is a lot to consider here.
