A couple of IV q's. One is a calcualtion Q

Published

Ok, if someone has an order to receive 2 or more IV meds at different times, and they are all compatible, you can use the SAME tubing, right?

Help me figure this out. I know I'm thinking to much into it, but please help...

Order: 500ml of LR to infuse over 3 hours.

How do you figure out what to set the pump at? :uhoh3:

1. Yes, provided the meds are compatible with whatever solution you have running.

2. Since the drip rate will be ml/hr, divide 500(ml) by 3(h).

Depends on the situation. If you are working in an ICU with vasoactive drips, most of these will need a dedicated line that should not be shared with another medication: nipride, levophed, epinephrine, etc. This is not due to incompatibility issues, but dosage issues. Mixing these powerful medications can result in an inadvertant "bolus" to the patient. Just a slight adjustment in the amount of any of these medications can have a dramatic effect on the patient's hemodynamic status.

Are you asking about bolus doses or IV infusions? Bolus doses are fine as long as they are compatible with the fluid/meds running in the line. If in doubt (or you have limited access), flush well at the hub (if possible or as close as you can get) with NS before and after giving the med (better yet, start another line). As for IVF or intermittent IVF (potassium, antibotics, phenytoin, etc), always use the same tubing as used for the previous dose of the med - don't 'mix n match' tubing. Again, if in doubt, get new tubing. Also, check your facility's policy of re-using lines.

Mls divided by hours. (167ml/hr)

Thanks ladies.

One mor e Q about dosage....

How do you calculate if, lets say, the order reads....

80ml to be infused over 15 minutes...or 10 minutes - please explain both for my practice.

80ml/15 minutes X 60 minutes/ 1 hour = 320 ml/ hr

80 ml/10 minutes X 60 minutes/ 1 hour = 480 ml/ hr

80ml/15 minutes X 60 minutes/ 1 hour = 320 ml/ hr

80 ml/10 minutes X 60 minutes/ 1 hour = 480 ml/ hr

Yes it helped, thanks.

That same method can be used when determining what rate to set the Tube feeding at as well, no? Lets say an order for Jevity reads...

30ml Jevity to be given over 15 min via pump. So,,,

30ml/15min x 60min/1hr = 120ml/hr is what I would set the infusion rate at?

That's correct. Remember to set your "volume to be infused" at 30 ml.
