just had to vent...

i am going to start my lvn program very soon, and am completely ecstatic about it! :D

but recently, i have ran into "friends" and acquaintances that i've known through the years. they of course ask me what i've been up to, and i happily reply back that i will be getting into nursing. unfortunately, for some reason more than half of them cringed and asked me if i really wanted to do this. and i just nodded my head knowing that in their minds they're thinking that it's not such a glamorous profession. i never truly realized that to some people nursing was attached to such a harsh stigma.

yes, i know the job entails bed pans, catheters, bathing, cleaning up urine and feces, etc. but honestly, i feel sympathetic for those patients who will not be able to do these things. i've always had a soft spot of elders especially, because i know once i get old someone is going to have to care for me to.

anyhow, initially it just made me feel upset & disappointed about their reactions. honestly, i do not care about how they feel about nursing. i know in my :heartbeat it is truly an under appreciated profession and i wish more of the world could realize how caring, dedicated, and extremely hard working nurses are.

Hanna, that's how some people will react to the news someone is going to be a parent: vomit, pee, poop, snot, sleepless nights, etc. Don't let them steal your excitement. Just don't take their comments personally...they prob. admire you. You also may find nursing students who drop out/ flunk out who will say the same thing to save face...don't let it bring you down. AND congrats!

Most people who make negative remarks are usually envious. Let's face it, NS is tough and not everyone has the willpower and brains to get thru it.....and as Psalm said...people dislike kids, working in restaurants, etc but it is because everyone finds something that they love doing, that this world evolves.

Don't let anyone shatter your goals and know the remarks will continue when you can't spend social time w/them, etc because of school....and then ask them if they truly love their job? If not, then why aren't they changing their lives, like you.....lol...and you will be making a difference, are they?

When people like that says things like that, it makes me cringe... they need to think about it- one day that patient is going to be them and the profession that they cringed at will be the profession that will get them well. :chuckle Honestly, don't let them comments get to you. Do you and be happy with the awesome profession we have all chosen. They are probably envious and will probably do the same real soon, and you will look up and be like, "so you're going to nursing school huh". Hugs to you and high five for handling it in such an awesome way!:yeah:
