A&P Question

Hi all! I'm all ready thinking ahead to next sem. I keep hearing about the Anatomy flash cards and coloring books? Do/did you use these or anything else to help you remember all that info? Did they help? Which one is better? Any advice is apprecieated, I want to get a head start on that class, so I'd like to get something soon!

I dont know what extent anatomy is used in nursing school as I havent started yet. But the first 2 years of my BS was spent in a sports medicine program as an athletic training student. The easiest way I found to learn and retain the information was flash cards, repitition and group studying. The skeletal system, the body cavities and organ systems come pretty quick. The hardest part was origins, insertions and innervations for the muscles. In my program the latter was a completely seperate class called functional anatomy.

Specializes in home health, neuro, palliative care.

The coloring books are great if you're a visual person. I found the textbook publishers' websites invaluable as well, but the quality can vary greatly author to author. I have Anatomy flashcards on my PDA that are pretty cool, too. They are a little spendy, but the pictures will great for patient ed as well, so it was a good investment.

There is a lot of information, but it gets easier as you go along. I found it helpful to spend some time on it every day. If you have a willing friend or family member, explaining things to them can really reinforce your learning. Best of luck, and feel free to PM me if you run into trouble.

Specializes in OR Internship starting in Jan!!.

Personally, I am not a fan of the coloring books. If your bookstore has a copy of the book that has the pictures of the lab models, I suggest that one!

Dont make it a choir have fun with learning A&P its a really fun class if your interested in it. Ask questions dont try to memorize try to understand and then you'll never need flash cards or coloring books. I used the language of anatomy and physiology all the time around friends so I would have to explain to them what I was talking about..

Loved the anatomy coloring books. coloring in and echoing the name in my head helped me!!!

My instructor gave extensive homework packets with coloring that took HOURS to complete... sometimes 6 hours per packet but it did help in learning the material.

I also used flashcards and I photocopied lots of blank diagrams to fill in on my own, sometimes I would do the same diagram multiple times until I could fill it in completely on my own.

I also scheduled extra lab time outside of class to study the models on my own and did so a few hours per week until I felt confident with them.

I've never heard of A&P coloring books.

I have a friend whos daughter is just starting, and she's having trouble with A&P. She asked me for suggestions, but didn't give me anything specific. Does anyone know, where do you get these coloring books?

Is there somewhere online, you could print them?

Thanks

i found the coloring books at both border's and barnes & noble in the health / medicine section...it's about $19.99 for one. my college bookstore carries them, too.

Several of the A & P instructors at my school use the coloring books but fortunately mine does not. He did take pictures and post them online of the skull, bones, and organ models and I plan on labeling them numerically and making my own flash cards for them. I work at the college bookstore and we do sell two sets of flash cards that are ready made and are used by the PT classes but I think they would be helpful for anatomy as well. If anyone wants to know the name of the company they're through I can look it up for them just send me a pm.

Specializes in None.

flashcards are the most helpful for me. We have to do coloring book assignments too, but for me personally, they're not very helpful in my understanding or retention of the material. (they can be fun though-like being a kid again lol).

Another thing I find really helps out: interacive websites. I love short movies or simulations that you can find on some websites.
