CNA/Tech Experience for UWOSH

U.S.A. Wisconsin

Published

Hello everyone!

I am almost finished my CNA training and have interviewed for two CNA/PCT positions locally. One is at an acute care hospital where I'd work PRN and get a lot of experience in various departments, learn EKG's, Acuchecks etc. The other is with a pediatric specialty care facility where the majority of patients are more longer-term, on ventilators and have trachs etc. The goal of the pediatric facility (per the interviewer) would be to hire me and keep me on thru my BSN with the hopes of having me work as an RN there. My interest is definitely Peds and most of my experience is in child/adolescent psych both inpatient and outpatient. (Not necessarily interested in psych nursing, just was my 1st degree and all my early work experience.)

I am definitely more interested in the peds position because that is my long-term nursing career goal (possibly NICU, definitely pediatric hospital, possibly long term care but not sure), but I worry that for my application into UWOSH accelerated second degree program they might rather the hospital position for adult care? (The facility takes infant-21 yo by the way whereas I won't get much/any peds experience in the hospital bc the pediatric wing is separate with their own techs.) On the other hand, I heard that long-term care is preferred to acute care.

What do you all think? Thanks!! :)

If the rest of your application is strong I don't think it would be a breaking point. They accept a large variety of back grounds. The only thing about the adult care is that it would make clinicals easier for you.
