Difference Between WGU Pre-licensing Classes and Traditional

Nursing Students Western Governors

Question for Pre-licensing students or staff of .

I was reading the Pre-Licensing BSN program and the list of classes that will be completed.

I notice that they are alittle different from what I normally see as a course.

I would normally see classes name Med/Surg, OB/Peds, Gerontolgy, Mental Health/Psych, Public/Community Health and Home Health.

I do see a couple with WGU but there are other names of courses such as Caring Arts and Science Across the Lifespan, Chronic Care of Adult, Organizations Systems, Critical Care Nursing.

More so anything I am looking for what is equivalent to Med Surg. They break everything down multiple classes unlike the other schools. I see so many students from schools talking about Med Surg, Patho, etc.

I would like to get a kick start in studying and learning what I will be learning in the near future.

Alot of classes are given at WGU compared to the other schools. I guess its because they are breaking them down to multiple classes when traditional schools puts one area in one course.

What are you feedbacks?

Caring Arts and Science Across the Lifespan CASAL I and CASAL II are Med/Surg 1 and Med/Surg 2, Chronic Care is still Med/Surg type material, but with a focus on chronic health care problems.

Your other clinical courses are psych, OB, Peds, community health, and critical care and of course fundamentals in the beginning. I might be missing something. I'd have to go look. You also have a bunch of non-clinical courses like organizational systems and professional roles and values and the evidence based practice course. (There are bunch more.) The non-clinical courses are more your management and leadership type courses.

Hope that helps.

Awesome!!! Thank you so much!! I was looking at the list of classes and was thinking, where is the Med Surg. I saw some postings from students in a Facebook group I am in and they posted the pages from Memory Notebook for Nursing. I am going to make sure I get those because they say it is very good for remembering and helping learn easier.

I have been finding a ton of great resources to use even before starting school.

Since I was an EMT, Medical Assistant and have been certified as an CNA so alot of medical terminology and illnesses I know and I will get alot of refreshers but I am going to be reading alot of materials before October. I can't wait!!!

Again thank you so much. This helped alot.
