Mountain State University Nursing program?

Hey all, I just got accepted to the nursing program at Mtn. St. U and I am just wondering how the program is there? Is there a ranking or anything of that nature on the school? I have also applied to WVU (where i currently attend), Marshall, and university of north carolina. I'm hoping to get in to WVU's program but I wont hear anything back until next month. Does anyone know how good the programs are in these schools? Thanks!

It is very expensive. I think the passing rate on the NCLEX is also below average (nationwide). I would honestly look into Southern or St. Marys. They are only ADN programs but a BSN will do you little good if you dont pass the NCLEX.

I attended Mountain State for 2 years, not in the nursing program though but the costs were outrageous. Check out barefootlady's post about the passage rates.

i work with a guy who told me he has spent 3 years and $35,000 at Mtn. St. getting his BSN. Ridiculous. I suggest you check CAMC (chaleston) and their 'train while we pay' class. I just saw them bragging about it in the RN news letter. You have to commit to working for them after school, but what the h, you have to work somewhere and get that initial experience. Then you can go wherever.icon7.gif

Geez so it seems like its a bad place to go just from those couple comments. I've heard from a couple other people it isn't a good place to go. what about WVU's program, I know its hard to get into but is it really good? what would be the best school in WV

In 2007 West Liberty State College (BSN Program) and Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College, Kanawha Valley and Moorefield Cohorts, (ADN Program) had 100% pass rates on the NCLEX-RN.

It is extremely important to check out pass rates on the national licesure exam. This will tell you the quality of the program. Good luck!:nurse:

MSU is extremely expensive. Are you going to be a traditional student? cohort?

Whoooo....Slow down a minute. Mountain State is wonderful. I am currently in their nursing program and it is wondeful. The instructors are very caring & compassionate & will try to help you in anyway possible. As far as tuition goes I did not do my pre-reqs there because it is pricey so I did them at Bluefield State. I am full time at Mtn. State and after my books and tuition this semester just for nursing classes was $4300 this fall semester. I would recommend Mtn State nursing & their passing rate for the 2008 class was I know everyone but 2 so I think thats pretty good. Good luck!

Don't get me wrong, I attended Mountain State back in the 90s taking general classes. I really loved it. The instructors were great and to be honest the general classes were relatively easy.

But the costs were high. I went to Bluefield state for the nursing program mainly due to their NCLEX passage rate. Mountain State may have had a good year last year but look at the table that was posted. What is a bit concerning is that they do not seem to be consistent. And if you attend Mountain State you are going to have a large bill--30,000+ or more? I was quoting from an article in the paper that stated their passage rate was in the 71 percent in 2007

While trying to avoid the BSN/ADN debate I will be as bold to tell you this. Neither degree means much at all without being able to use the words RN. So when looking for a college, focus on their NCLEX passage percentage. The original poster had the luxury of choosing among several colleges in our state, again I would recommend a strong consistent program like Bluefield or St. Mary's. Southern's Institute program looks really strong too.

Well might as well update. I decided to go to WVU. I am attending Potomac state for one year then transferring to Morgantown to finish up. Hopefully since I have been in school for 4 years i can get the accelerated program. They're NCLEX passing rate is good and they are taking special measures to raise that rate. I have to drive 1 1/2 hours 4 days a week for class but next semester i only go 3 days so it's not too bad. I'm happy with the school and can't wait to get to WVU to finish up

Good luck at WVU. It is not a bad school of nursing and the hospital has plenty to offer in learning experiences for the students.
