Moving to DC in May or June

U.S.A. Washington DC

Hey guys! I'm new here and I really like it so far. I am graduating in just a few short months and am planning on moving to the DC area. I would like to work at Children's because ultimately that is where my heart lies. I am doing my synthesis hours in PICU and another peds unit at University of Kentucky Children's Hospital. Are there any pointers you can give me about Childrens in particular? Does Children's have a good orientation because my professors are trying to scare us by telling us that we wont get an orientation if we start in a specialty area, that we need to start in MedSurg first and I've heard different things from other people but I was wondering what their policy is. What hospitals in the area would be good for a new grad to work at? Also what is a good starting salary for a new grad nurse in that area? I have been looking online and I really haven't found much that is credible.

I am pretty nervous about being able to find a job. I will be graduating from Berea College in Berea, KY.

I am also looking for interview pointers if you have any that would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,

Mary (BCGrad...almost:wink2:)

I've read through the other threads that talk about Children's and they were very helpful but I'd still like any additional information you can provide (I didnt want you to think I hadn't looked into it)

Hi!

I will be moving to DC in August and will be starting the new grad program in the NICU at Childrens. So far I have heard exceptionally good things about the New Grad programs there, there are others on this board that have gone through it already but those I talked to really liked it. I'm not sure if it is the same throughout the hospital but for the NICU the orientation is 6 months (paid) with preceptorship and classroom hours and it is broken down into three parts each one with increasing care and responsibility. Individual units can give more information about their particular orientations obviously but I think there is generally a couple of new grads in each of the programs in order to make up the classroom sessions.

Are you definitely moving to DC? Do you know where you are going to live yet? I can't wait to start looking for housing but will probably wait until the beginning of the summer

I am definitely moving there. I do not know where I am going to live but I have friends/family in the area who are going to be helping me find a place. I hope to have a place lined up by the time I graduate! I will be in DC during my spring break to have an interview at Children's I'm going to call them tomorrow to set one up. I am extremely nervous! but very excited at the same time.

Good luck! Where are you originally from? Where did you go to school?

Good Luck with your Interview!

I am from Boston, go to UMASS Amherst and know no one in DC...but I'm very excited to move there and get started working!

Thats awesome! I'm originally from western mass--near Amherst actually hahah (South Deerfield) and I went to school some of the time in Amherst..small world
