Anyone accepted to Georgetown?

U.S.A. Washington DC

Published

Hey all! I was wondering if anyone got into Georgetown and/or got the WHC scholarship? I got into the Accelerated BSN program and I'm finding it hard to make a decision so I just wanted to see if anyone else is in the same boat.

I also got into NYU so picking a school is a challenge at the moment, but passing up an 80 percent scholarship seems like a dumb thing to do. But three years is a freakin long commitment...

Any opinions? Anyone else in the same boat?

Sosiouxme - Did you get into Georgetown?

Yes, but I can't go. Before the interview, I had done the online chat and asked if I could defer to Fall '09 (I have classes until December 21 and originally thought Georgetown didn't start until the end of January, NOT the first week of January!), and they said "Yes." Then, at the interview, they said "No." Also, I was a little disconcerted that they foist the "18 units a semester" regulation on students, even though those students have already completed certain classes (e.g. Pharmacology, Pathophysiology, etc.). Lastly, prior to the interview, I never got a straight answer about tuition cost but was referred to the "Undergraduate Bulletin," which made it appear that tuition would be somewhere around $45,000, not the $68,000 quoted at the interview. I would have HAD to sign up for the WHC program, and didn't really want to commit to that.

I'm really upset, because it was the only school I applied to, and REALLY wanted to go there. I loved the area (Alexandria, VA), loved the simulation lab (especially the pediatric simulator) and, despite the cost and the 18-unit thing, would have still probably have gone if only I could have deferred until Fall.

Hello,

Do you have any pointers on the whole interview process ?? I will be going in late March... to interview for the accelerated BSN program to begin in Fall 09. I know several of you have been down this road and I feel that I will be facing the same situations that yall have listed here. I am more concerned about being prepared for the interview that is like in a week :) Thanks soo much and good luck on your journey and dreams to become a nurse!!!

They have about 25 people in each interview. You all meet in a room and have "Orientation." They show a video, and have staff members pitch a spiel about the program. One thing I can tell you is that everyone in our room was astounded at the cost, as it was much more than we all figured when referred to the "Undergraduate Bulletin." They absolutely PUSH the scholarship, and that's why I think the tuition is so hefty; they WANT everyone to have to apply for the scholarship.

That being said, you should go on the Washington Hospital TOUR before your interview (I didn't, because was doing a red-eye flight from California, didn't know how long it would take to find the school, parking, the building, etc., PLUS had no interest in that scholarship). They WERE REALLY INDIGNANT during my personal interview that I hadn't gone on the tour. So, to be on the safe side, indicate MUCH interest in the scholarship even if you have no intention of taking it. They must be getting huge funding from that whole thing.

You will have to get together in little groups to do a "scenario" which is very intimidating. Our scenario was a plane crash on a desert island with the victims have various medical issues, and the group having having to decide who would stay, who would go for help, etc. One of the staff sits in and writes down what the individuals are contributing: it was VERY nerveracking to me. The best advice I can give you there is to say as little as possible and only chime in when you absolutely know, without a shadow of a doubt, what you are talking about, or when someone else says something that makes sense and you agree. The staff member seemes to "frown" upon those people who were very assertive.

During your personal interview (you will be assigned to one of four faculty groups - I got the worst! - and be called in individually one-by-one), they will ask you "Why Georgetown," "Why Nursing NOW in your life," "Why Nursing PERIOD," "How will you manage your course load," "Can you live here," and "What makes you think you can do this." Also VERY intimidating. Again, say as little as possible while answering whatever it is you think that THEY want to hear. When I would start to get on a soapbox about the medical system today and how I wanted to make beneficial changes and go "back to focusing on the patient," or "phasing out the current practice of DRUGS first, PATIENT second," I got the evil eye from everyone. Just say that you to contribute as much as you can to the system the way it is, PERIOD. Georgetown is very "by-the-book" and is geared toward student performance to elevate their statistics - they don't want to hear about any "noble causes."

Also, according to the students who talked to us, Georgetown is one of those schools who believes that the student is responsible for their own learning - they give very little assistance and the students basically have to hit the ground running and learn 90% on their own. So, stress the fact that you are a self starter who has a talent for learning independently with little assistance.

Any more questions, let me know.

Take a deep breath and don't worry about it. Be yourself. Be honest. The best answers can be the most simple and obvious ones. I would say that being invited for an interview is 80% of the battle. I just started at Georgetown so the interview process is very fresh in my mind. The faculty and staff interviewers are all very approachable and easy-going. There is nothing intimidating - everything is very meant to be conversational. And I don't know what other people might be leading you to believe, but they do not push the scholarship in anyway. I would say that half my class is doing it and the other half isn't. If you have any questions, I'm happy to discuss more privately.

My interview day was nothing like sosiouxme's. It was a long day, no doubt. There were 21-22 people at my interview session. We spent the first half of the day touring WHC. They provided us with breakfast at around 10 AM. We all had a chance to then explain what led us to nursing. It was great hearing about other people's experiences. We were then provided with lunch, and Laura Adams came and gave us information about Georgetown Nursing, financial aid, costs, and the curriculum. Then, we were divided into three interview groups. There was no group process. We all just went in individually and spoke to three faculty/staff. It was very laid back and relaxing. We were told that if we were granted an interview that we were qualified to attend, and that the interview was to see if we were a good fit for the school. We also got a tour of St. Mary's Hall, and a tour of Georgetown University.

I interviewed for fall 2009.

Hi Koala! Thanks so much for your post re: your interview! I have mine next week, and it is nice to hear it isn't scary like others make it sound! Did they talk any about the scholarship with WHC (I assume they do since we go to WHC)? I know I'm not into Gtown yet, but have really been impressed with everything I've seen and been told so far, so I'm hoping I get even more insight into the program on my interview day. Good luck on getting in, and maybe I'll see you in fall '09!

They covered the scholarship pretty well while we toured WHC, and there was plenty of time for us to ask questions throughout the day about the scholarship. Good luck, Georgetown is my dream school but I can only afford to go there if I get the scholarship. Hope to see you there in the fall!

Ditto on the scholarship - it will be very hard to afford without it! Thanks for the info Koala!

Thanks to everyone for there comments and encourgment. I had my interview for the 2nd BSN prigram for Fall 09. It was a great experience and was very informative. Everyone was so helpful and excited about the program. The interview was very conversational and not intimidating and stressful... Thanks so much

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for the helpful posts. I have an interview at GU next week and am nervous.

I noticed that the deadline for WHC scholarship is April 8th. A day after my interview. Are we suppose to apply for the scholarship before we get an admissions decision without an opportunity to see the place where we will commit to working for 3 years after graduation?

It seems like a silly idea. Does anyone else think so?

FYI

"The Georgetown Scholars at Washington Hospital Center Scholarship application deadline has been extended until April 15th. You may only submit the form once so please wait until your essays are finalized before sending."
