University of Maryland Traditional BSN Fall Program: Any idea when we will hear back?
There are also programs with MD hospitals where you will get one year of in-state tuition if you commit to working at a MD hospital for 2 years. Theorhetically, you could commit to 4 years and get in-state for both years... I live in DC and looked into those in case I ended up at UMd since EVERYWHERE is out of state for DC residents who already have degrees.

George Mason Accelerated BSN 2009
Yeah, I'm not sure - that is just what my friend told me the admissions people told her. Guess the number of transfers that get in varies year to year depending on the students applying. I had a 4.0 which surprised me about not getting into the traditional program in addition to the 2nd degree, but as mentioned, maybe this year they weren't considering transfers due to the numbers already enrolled at Mason. But touche - just something for future applicants to consider.

Georgetown-WHC scholars program
Hey, thanks so much for the congrats - again, I'm SUPER-EXCITED to be able to go and get the scholarship! The interview wasn't too bad, just kind of a long day, and the interviews were at the end of everything (so we were all kinda pooped). I think my group had 40 people, but they said we were the largest group for the interview round, and that most days there were only about 20 applicants. I had a lot of fun at the hospital (where you spend most of the day) walking around, hearing more about WHC, meeting with some of the professors/nurses who will be teaching some of our classes, and the other applicants. There was sort of a general discussion while we were at WHC, and the interview at the end of the day was more formal, although it was very brief, and none of the questions were out of left field or really surprising. I honestly think if you make it to the interview (I think they said for fall '09 they had over 300 applicants (the most to-date, although I feel like that number may keep growing w/ the scholarship), and invited less than 1/3 back for the interview round, accepted about 60-something, and about 40-something got the scholarship). Just be yourself and just be sure to let them really understand why you want to go back to school for nursing, and you'll be fine. Overall, it wasn't intimidating or scary - I just remember feeling anxious the whole time because I was really impressed by everything and REALLY hoped I got in! Good luck with it, and I too hope to see you too in the spring!

George Mason Accelerated BSN 2009
On a related note, I got into the 2nd degree program for this fall, but not the regular one, and a friend of mine didn't get into any of them. She said when she spoke to someone at Mason, they told her they didn't even consider "transfer" students for the regular 2-year program. That means until you are taking classes at Mason, you won't even be considered for acceptance into anything but the 2nd degree program. While I didn't decide to go to Mason, this was just one of many interactions with the administration at Mason that has proved very frustrating to me. They did not tell me this in the info session I went to, and while it did not cost any extra to apply to both, I still think that is an important piece of information to know considering how time-consuming and occasionally confusing the application process can be, especially if you are applying to more than one program. While I know these individuals were only a part of Mason's admin, it makes me question other aspects of the program when one part of the school system is so dysfunctional. Good luck to all though - I'm sure no matter where you go, you will find yourself in a rewarding career.

GWU
Georgetown also has a scholarship opportunity with Washington Hospital Center - 80% tuition is covered if you work for WHC after you graduate. GWU is known for it's great medical grad programs (and some of their other undergrad), so I'm sure their nursing program WILL be good, but I saw they only took 25 people for fall, and I would be hesistant to attend such a new program myself (although I'm sure, as I said, it will become a very respectable one based on the caliber of many of their other related courses/degrees).

Georgetown-WHC scholars program
Hi! I response to you both, I am going to be attending Georgetown's 2nd degree program this fall, and received the WHC scholarship. I'm super-excited about it, and it definitely is an amazing opportunity! I can't tell you how it will be having most of your clinicals there, but honestly, I think it is worth it unless you want to get into the clincal practice setting. I believe they said we start in Feb. following our graduation in Dec., and pass the NCLEX (we get two tries they said, although Georgetown's pass rate last year for the graduating cohort was 100% on the first try). I think the pediatric and psych clinicals are not at WHC, but you do everything else there. I think this is going to be a great advantage to have since it will acclimate us to WHC (since it is HUGE) before we even set foot in the door as employees. Also, while you do sign a contract committing yourself for 3 years, that is only if you intend to not have to pay back anything in regards to your tuition. WHC does have the tuition you would owe back figured out on a sliding scale in case you do decide to cut out early. That is certainly not my plan, but again, at least it doesn't mean you have sold your soul and are locked in (although you would be paying them back a good chunk of change). I'm really excited and I'm looking forward to a lot of great experiences with my new cohort and those individuals who are also WHC scholars with me! Good luck!

accelerated courses in DC metro area
I just completed the whole pre-requisite/application/decision process, and like you, I was ideally looking for a 2nd degree program. Marymount, GMU, Georgetown and UMd (Shady Grove) all have accellerated 2nd degree programs. UMd, GMU, Catholic and Marymount also have the regular 4 semester option too. As far as rankings go, they are hard to find for nursing schools because they are apparentely only ranked every 3 years. UMd actually has the #7 program in the country, and based on that, they are the highest ranked in the area. Some things to note when looking at the programs in the area are that there is money available for non-resident students who go to UMd and are willing to work at a Maryland hospital after graduation, and Georgetown has a scholarship program in conjunction with WHC - approx. 2/3 of the cohort this year received an 80% tuition reimbursement (with a 3 year committment to WHC). There is also an INOVA scholarship program that applies to both GMU and Georgetown as well (I think the latter also has it...not 100% though). They all have information sessions - I'd go to one of those for each program you are interested in (Marymount didn't have one though) - I found them very helpful and it gave you a feel for who you might be going to school with, and what the schools/admin/etc...were like. One bit of inside info from a friend who did not get into GMU's regular program - someone in admissions told her that they were not even looking at people who had applied to their regular 4 semester program that had transfer status (I have also myself had a few ridiculously bad admin experiences with Mason during the process as well), even though when I went to their info session, they did not tell us this, which I thought wasn't very cool. Anyways...it's a lot to think about, but worth speding some quality time researching! Good luck!

Haha...me too! I would be shocked if they don't tell us today - putting it off TWICE after not making a deadline they set for themselves (and told us) would be crazy...but who knows anymore. I think I'm going to step out for lunch - that seemed to work last time (I got the email 5 minutes after I got back)!
