NVCC Fall 2008

U.S.A. Virginia

Hello-

I'm new to this forum and was wondering are there any NVCC Nursing students here? I have applied for nursing program at NVCC Fall 2008-heard it's a competative program this year. Has anyone received their acceptance letter for Fall 2008? To the existing students, any advice for new students? Thanks!

I recently got accepted to NVCC's Nursing Program. I have a couple of questions.

1. Do we really need all of the books on the text book lists? Why are we "required" to buy all of the review books.

2. Most importantly....what color scrubs do we wear?? :)

Thanks and congrats to everyone else who got in!

I have a digital recorder and it easily transfers into itunes so you can listen to lectures on your ipod. For NAS I listened to lectures at work, in the car, getting ready for work, cooking. It helps to drill it into your head. While your in class, you don't realize how much you do miss since you're taking notes.

On our book list last year it stated what books you HAD to have, and ones they recommended! As well it listed for what classes they were for, nur 111, nur 118, etc!

I can't say for sure if you require ALL the books, as I have not seen your list! I know last year, one didnt have to buy all the books. The main ones we ised for NUR 111 were the Harkreader--fundamentals of Nursing, Ignatavicius, which you don't have, as it has been replaced so I have been told. As well used Mckinney--MAternal child nursing (nur 118 2nd semester)and Perry & Potter (2005). Clinical Nursing Skills & Techniques (6th ed). St. Louis, MO: Mosby for lab!

When you get ur syllabus, it will state the reading from which books. The review books, such as any of the Reviews & Rationales series (there are quite a few of them--library has some as well)are great to study from. Many felt there were similar questions from those on some of the exams! I bought them and thought they helped. I buy al my books from half.com or ebay.com, some say amazon is good as well. lot cheaper than the bookstore!! Best of luck

The books that last yrs class are using are what I am thinking this class will use. They were just replaced last yr and aren't a yr old yet. Maybe I am misreading your post.

"O never mind, I didn't notice the yr 2005-Those I do believe were replaced for the 2006 books or book."

Ok, I just looked at my book list that was given out at last years orientation----they say dont throw anything out till u graduate,lol--

Our book list was in a table format, and has 7 columns: Author, Course #, title, edition, ISBN #, and RQ if Required, or Optional!

That book list that we had was for the WHOLE two years. Your books should remain the same. For example, we are still using Iggy, BUT you guys have a different book

First semester your going to be taking NUR 111 and NUR 150 if you wish. We had the option (maybe you do as well) to take NUR 150 in the Spring semester. So you don't have to buy the books for NUR 118 (second semester)

Looking over MY list, there are probably soem books that you dont have to buy, but they say required, such as the Comprehensive review for the NCLEX or Henkes math dosage calculations, BUT they come in extremely handy! The NCLEX book has multiple sections and great to use as a study tool, lots of questions to go over. And of course one requires to know drug calculations.

Your first semester, hectic as it is, especially being new, is probably easier than the second semester. So my advice is to take NUR 150 in 1st semester. i did mine online (second semester) and was able to get ahead. There are (or at least were, things are always changing) 2 group projects for NUR 150. 1 of them is easy enough to coordinate online, the other gets you out in the community and takes a team effort.

As wel as soon as you get the reading for the Fall semester, start it ASAP,lol There is a lot of reading, and the load only increases in the second semester, but if you do a bit each day, its very manageable, skip a few days, that just adds on the stress.

How long is ur orientation scheduled for? I think ours was scheduled for a day, but were out by noon. Have i stressed enough on doing that math study package numerous times, and read the instructions? lol Best of luck, you will kick butt!!

Looks like the maternal and med surg books are different from last yr. I pulled up the list form the nvcc medical campus bookstore. I wonder why the change? I guess the school is trying to keep up with what needs to be taught.

Medical books are constantly changing. One of the profs stated by the time a book gets to print, its almost 5 years behind the times, lol
