JMU BSN program - Please answer

I am thinking about transferring to JMU for nursing. I know I would have to attend JMU before I can even apply to the BSN nursing program, which means I will end up being there for three years (i am a sophomore now). This is a big decision for me and I am just kind of freaking out about getting in. Does anyone know how competitive it is? I know the website says Stage I criteria is like a 3.2 GPA and Stage II is a 2.7, but what GPA do I need realistically to have a good shot at getting in?

If anyone has any other information on JMU please share!

Why not get your associate's at a community college?

Well I am already a sophomore at a four year university so its too late to decide to get my associates unless I wanted to waste a ton of my parent's money. And I also want to be able to go to graduate school in the future so I will need my BSN to do that.

Do you know anything about JMU's bachelor's program?

I wish. I don't have money to even attend university, it makes me sad. People my age should be studying hard, spending time with new friends at their universities, and just making those years of their life memorable. =/ You just need to look at their website. I've looked at it plenty of times wondering what could be. . .Good luck.

While I went to JMU as a nursing major my freshman year, I can't really help you out since I transfered out as soon as I could.

Where do you go currently? I assume there isn't a nursing program there? Or is this a change in Major?

The reasons I transfered out were numerous but top on the list was the general "party and drink! who gives a darn about education" atmosphere and the fact that there are no hospitals in the area.

I believe JMU nursing students have to drive to UVA's hospital on weekends to get their clinical experience.

Personally, unless you live in or near Harrisonburg it might be more cost effective to try for the community college nursing program or another university. The tuition at JMU is not cheap, especially if you live on campus.

I've also heard that some JMU students are doing clinicals up here in Winchester, as well. One of my coworkers is a student at Lord Fairfax Community College, and he said that he and his classmates are competing for clinical space with students from Shenandoah University and JMU. Yikes!

JMU students do clinicals in variety of sites. Rockingham Memorial Hospital is there in Harrisonburg, but students are also in Winchester, Staunton, Fishersville and Charlottesville for Peds.

Many schools use UVa for peds since many other facilities do not have decent-sized acute care peds units. The UVa peds unit usually sees students from UVa, Piedmont, Blue Ridge, JMU, Liberty, and Lynchburg.

I was talking recently to students from UMaryland-Baltimore. They have clinicals ranging from Wilmington, Delaware to Alexandria, VA. Clinical assignments for them can be up to 90 miles in any direction from Baltimore.

Wow good lord 90 miles? Thats crazy that they would have to spread out so far in Maryland.

Northern Virginia schools seems to have sites mainly in fairfax, arlington, and alexadria.

Notable exceptions would be the few in Loudin and Prince William counties as well as mary washington hospital in Fredericksburg, but not many.

and here I thought having to go 30 miles for my psych clinical was outrageous.
