UTA Co-op course versus Medical Terminology

As a nurse with 20+ years of experience I have returned to school, RN to BSN program. Thus far have enjoyed the program.

Now the question...I need one elective (my oncology certification completes one of the electives) which class should I take? What are the pros/cons of the Coop course versus Medical Terminology?

Why would you take medical terminology? You have 20 years nursing experience?

I just finished co-op and kind of wished I had taken medical terminology. You have to be employed for at least 120 hours over the course, or you cannot take the class. I was in the process of transitioning to a new job and barely made the 120 hours. The instructors were very understanding and offered to give me a paper assignment to write in lieu of my missing hours (which freaked me out). Co-op involves journaling, discussion boards, finding research papers, and a final paper. I think I would have rather just studied for med. terminology and taken tests-of course I don't know that is how the course goes but it sounds better to me. Co-op is great if you love writing, especially about yourself (which I don't). Hope this helps!

The main factor is time. I spoke to a nurse who graduated from UTA RN-BSN program who recommended Med. Terminology if I needed a break from writing papers:)

I took co-op and I hated it. I don't mind writing papers but the journal was such an annoyance. On my survey after the course I recommended that they adjust the course to reflect other nursing fields like case management, home health, hospice, etc because the course was really geared towards hospital nursing. I am a care manager working from home and felt like I had to make up journal entries because the topics we had to journal on didn't apply to my position. I would have much preferred the medical terminology class but it wasn't offered during that session. It's definitely not a hard class but was definitely my least favorite.

Could not agree with you more. I hated co-op too. The journaling was awful!
