Are you allowed to pick up a travel contract but in the state you live in?

Absolutely. Usually the only restriction is if you quit at your current hospital they usually will not hire you as a travel nurse, but otherwise you can absolutely live at home and work as a travel nurse in your state.

A number of hospitals do have restrictions on where travel nurses are from such as not from within a 50, 100, or 250 mile radius from the hospital to avoid contaminating their local labor pool and driving up costs. Depends on the area. Doesn't hurt to try. Some areas such as Chicago have a large agency pool of local nurses who are not staff. It is easier on everyone to do a contract (or block booking) rather than shift by shift.
