Marian Hospital in Santa Maria, CA?

by Selke

Has anyone worked here? I will be starting an assignment in their L&D unit. I'll be living 2 blocks from the Pacific Ocean, so I couldn't turn this assignment down Any information will be appreciated!

Never worked there but lived nearby. Santa Maria itself is kind of out of the way and not very big. If you know you are living at one of the beach communities, you are going to have a little drive but you will be living in a nice environment.

Can I ask you what they pay an hour? And do they have differentials? I'm looking at that area as a new grad and would love to know!

You need to call the hospitals in the area and ask HR what they pay new grads, and IF they have a preceptorship program. Marian trains L&D nurses (their OB care is a bit behind the times, I will say, but the RNs independently run the unit, like residents or CNMs almost), and San Luis Obispo has 2 hospitals. Google is your friend ... and your telephone.

You won't get a travel job as a new grad. You must get hired and trained as staff. Check out other threads on this subject.

Thanks! Yeah, I know I wouldn't get a travel position. Actually didn't realize this was the travel nurse forum until now, I just searched for Santa Maria and found this thread.

Can I ask what you mean by their OB care being behind the times? I'm just trying to gather some independent information because I actually am interviewing with the Marian Medical Center in a couple of weeks, but was basically told that salary would be discussed at that point. So I just wanted some general idea if it's competitive to other areas of California.

I heard they won a huge pay increase after a threatened strike last year, to bring their salaries up to standard for central CA.

They have a lot of old dinosaur white male OBs who practice 30 - 40 years behind the times; that's all. Lots of episiotomies, calling the "doctor" "Doctor," they'll yell at you if called in before the head is halfway out. They have no people skills and don't care about the pts or the staff. Most of the pts are Oaxacan migrants. The RNs do absolutely everything, however, so you will become very independent and skilled. Nursing care and OB care is not up to date but is like what we were doing 15 - 20 years ago.
