Hurt Feelings

no it doesn't hurt my feelings if they don't want to renew sometimes its just because they don't need you anymore and its nothing more than that. plus if they don't renew you can go somewhere else and get new experience.

Would not have hurt my feelings, I consider myself temp until the hospital or floor can get fully staffed with in house nurses. I kind of look at all experiences as part of the fun and learning of travel nursing, most will be extremely good and a few will be bad. Keeps things interesting.

As a traveler you are only there for the time they need you, and when don't need you, it is time to move on. At 8 months, most travelers are more than ready to move on!

But yes, this issue may have been a factor in your not being renewed, and that is ok. Live, learn, grow and enjoy the experiences! Before you leave, get some written references, either from your manager and/or those you worked with! Very important!!

I'm not a traveler yet, I'm waiting for my daughter to go to college, but am planning on it down the road.

I actually wanted to comment on the 0.5 mg of Dilaudid issue. I work on an Oncology Unit and that dose seems perfectly reasonable to me. (Said without knowing the pt history, age, current condition, etc.) That dose wouldn't come close to touching the pain in the "average" CA pt, and Dilaudid usually shows resp depression effects sooner than "several hours later".

If they were talking to me about something like this, I'd think about going somewhere else anyway.

Just my thoughts. Keep your chin up though, it's never fun to get a talking to.

In the ER we usually give 1-2 mg. Sometimes more..

You'll never know if this perceived "medication error" was the cause of your contract not being renewed. I think if there are ANY "incidents" that get the attention of the MDs or management and a traveler is involved, the traveler will always take the fall. (The staff may do the same "error" and nobody would ever say anything.) They might not say anything to your agency about the so-called incident, either, they just won't renew you and may not want you back -- not so far as to put you on a do not use list, but an internal informal list to not rehire you. Yes, I'm a skeptic and very cynical about nursing management in general ...

Yes I agree..the 0.5mg dilaudid dose is not much for the typical cancer patient especially bone cancer. I worked oncology for 5years and we would give 2mg-5mg of Dilaudid IV for our thoracic and gyn oncolgy patients. And someone made a good point earlier....you would not see the respiratory depression hours later...you would see the deteroriation quickly...

This may be your time to just move on and learn a new experience!! God Bless You!!
