Psychiatric Rn considering contract in St. Louis-Details or advice in regard to area and hospitals.

I'm purposfully staying away from St. Louis with all this Ferguson crap. No sense in going to a high risk area.

There are hospitals in St. Louis which rank among the best in care in the nation. Ferguson is a community within its borders, and many people who work in the metroplex proper, have nothing to do with Ferguson except to know that it's within driving distance from downtown. Some who live and work in the suburbs aren't close to Ferguson either. Ferguson is in North County. Most of the big hospitals (Except for Christian Hospital NE) are miles away.

Thank-you- I am looking at DePaul and St. Mary's .... Yes I thought it would be a really strong choice for travel psych hospital experience . St. Charles is one of my possible choices for apartments.

St. Mary's is a good hospital. but, Depaul is right across the river from St. Charles. St. Charles is a good place to live.

St. Marys and DePaul are both part of SSM, I like St. Marys better but it would be about a 20-30 minute drive from St. Charles with traffic depending on exact location. Maryland Heights is a great area, easy access to everything and close to DePaul.

Thank you for the information ... Very helpful.

If you don't mind me asking, what company did you sign with?? I'm searching for a psych position in Missouri and will be traveling for the first time... Kind of scarey!! And you will love the SSM hospitals!!

PM me and I will give you the details or Facebook -Lorrie Coulson just attach message so I know who you are.... Love to have a travel buddy in area!

I'm from St. Louis and just left for a travel assignment (worked at St. Anthony's for over a year). Barnes is obviously the biggest and best hospital. I would definitely take St. Mary's over DePaul because it's in the city and that's my preferred lifestyle/patient population. However, if you want to live in St. Charles (which is nice, but I consider a completely different culture since it's all suburban and I consider it very sheltered), then definitely go for DePaul for the shorter commute (but there isn't much in Bridgeton plus there's a nuclear fire burning underground!). I'm not sure of the bed count or how the psych units differ, but my impression is that St. Mary's is bigger in general and you'll probably see more there. I also volunteered briefly at St. Mary's ER and I think they had 6 dedicated behavioral beds just in their ER with their own RNs.

St. Louis is a great city. Some of the Ferguson protests were blocks away from my house but I have never felt unsafe there. There's racial tension and guns, but I don't see any other city being that different in the US to be honest (now in Texas for an assignment!). Enjoy the City Museum and free zoo and museums!

Thank you so much that really helps. Happy travels...
